Hyundai Enters Pen-Computing Race; Pen Systems Broaden Hyundai’s Product Line

October 21, 1991 — Hyundai Electronics America informed industry editors and analysts of its intention to make an early entry in the emerging pen computing market segment.

A prototype of the pen computer will be on display at COMDEX this week, making Hyundai one of the first vendors to demonstrate this technology. Shipments will begin in mid-1992.

According to Joseph Reid, vice president, sales and marketing, ”Hyundai plans to be involved from the beginning in this segment, a segment most analysts project to become one of the fastest-growing in the industry, reaching the mobile work force and the vast majority of prospective users who have yet to adapt to PCs.”

Hyundai also announced strategic alliances with Microsoft, GO Corp., and Phoenix Technologies, to address the pen computing standards emerging in this market. The Hyundai product will be compatible with PenPoint from Go Corp., and Microsoft’s Windows for Pen Computing.  It will also utilize Phoenix Technologies’ new PenLeader hardware specifications.

Hyundai’s pen system will feature an 8.5-inch by 11 inches form factor including a writing surface, and a pen stylus. The product will be based on the 80386SL processor and configured with 4 MB of RAM, a 1.44 MB floppy, and a 40 MB hard disk drive. PCMCIA accessory slots and communication options will also be available.
