Vancouver-based PenMagic Software Inc. has begun shipping a major upgrade to its leading financial work processor Numero for the PenPoint environment. Numero 2.0 has over 100 new features which makes the program easier to use enabling people to create custom forms and electronic paper capable of performing complex calculations. The most significant enhancement is a new visual scripting system known as MagicScript.

The Magic in Numero

MagicScript enables users to create complex procedures using a friendly visually-oriented model that doesn’t require standard programming. Users activate a script by tapping on an on-screen button. Scripts can perform operations in the background or can present dialog boxes requesting user input. MagicScript is also flexible enough to allow multiple scripts to execute simultaneously.

Creating a script is a straightforward process. Users graphically connect “smart buttons” together which describe the flow of work in the script. Smart buttons are small self-contained objects which perform certain functions such as moving data, sorting, displaying a prompt, or collecting input from the user. The smart buttons are expandable enabling third-party developers to add new features in addition to the existing functions.

To add to the power of MagicScript, scripts can be nested within other scripts enabling users to create easy to debug subroutines which can then be reused anywhere in the Numero document. This enables users to save time and effort by creating a library of scripts that perform many tasks within their electronic forms.

Data Input Streamlined

Numero 2.0 also includes a new feature called a “chit.” A chit is simply a small piece of electronic paper that enables the user to input data quickly and easily, especially when forms and documents become large and complex. When used, the chit records the input data in the proper place on the form without forcing the user to navigate to this location. This enables novice users to quickly use complex forms without having to understand how the form is designed and organized. Likewise, using a small piece of electronic paper for input better suits the new class of smaller devices that we expect to arrive in the next few months.

Further Enhancements

Another important new feature of Numero is the ability to create multi-page documents which can help automate the production of sales orders, expense reports, and other electronic forms. Users can insert new pages to record sales orders, for example, while maintaining an up-to-date accounting of all important totals on the last page of the document. Users can also use a feature known as PresToLinks to create dynamic links between data in a Numero document and other PenPoint documents.

Other enhancements include an improved calculation-handling system that enables users to create or change formulas in the form using plain-language such as “Assets = Liabilities + Equity.” There are also several features for creating attractive page layouts along with a unified pen palette with various ink types and gesture capabilities. The new version of Numero also performs its calculations and database functions in the background enabling the user to continue working without interruption.

Updating LetterExpress 1.1

PenMagic also announced the shipment of an upgrade to its LetterExpress writing assistant. LetterExpress is a collection of fill-in-the-blank templates for many types of popular documents which enables users to quickly complete a correspondence. The new version of the application includes a new pen palette which provides greater flexibility for users to sign and annotate their letters. It also includes seamless integration with GO Mail and GO Fax, enabling users to send a completed document using electronic mail or fax.

They’re Here

Numero 2.0 is available immediately and has a suggested list price of $399. Current users can upgrade to the new version for $99 until June 30, 1993, at which time the upgrade price increases to $149. Numero is shipped with software that works with both Intel- and Hobbit-based computers. Numero 2.0 also comes with 80 ready-to-use pieces of “electronic paper” which can be employed in a variety of situations including sales orders, expense reports, and personal checkbooks. LetterExpress 1.1 is also available immediately for $199 with an option for existing users to upgrade for $25. Like Numero, LetterExpress comes with software for use on both Intel- and Hobbit-based mobile computers.
