While it may seem mundane at times, data entry is a prime application for current PDA platforms. In many cases, it comes down to the simple fact that these type of applications lend themselves to easy cost justification.
Omaha, Nebraska-based Sestra Inc. recently announced its entry into the field with PowerForms for Newton, an application set that consists of software for both the Newton and popular desktop computers. Using the package, developers can design and use standard company forms to collect information directly in electronic form.
The PowerForms package actually consists of four applications:
- PowerForms for Newton, the forms engine that runs on the Newton.
- PowerForms Designer for Newton, an application enabling designers to create the forms on Macintosh and Windows-based PCs.
- PowerForms Connect, a data transfer program for use between the Newton and desktop computers.
- FormMover, for moving forms from the desktop to the Newton.
PowerForms enables people to create intelligent forms with a range of input elements including radio buttons, pop-up lists, text and ink fields, check boxes, and others. PowerForms also includes an intelligent “segment” feature that can automatically transform a standard 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper form into a size suitable for the Newton screen.
PowerForms enables graphics such as PICT files to be incorporated into the form. The graphics are converted to Newton objects when they are transferred to the PDA.
