Device Serves as a Mobile Fax and Messaging System

Reflection Technology recently announced an updated version of its innovative FaxView personal fax reader. FaxView is a pocket-sized fax machine that uses a virtual screen to display faxes as if they were viewed on a 12-inch monitor. This makes it an ideal solution for truly mobile workers who need to review documents while on the go.

In this version, a number of enhancements that were previously available as custom options have become standard features. The virtual display works by having the user position the device close to an eye and looking into it. What they see is a high resolution (864×256) red on black image which, because of its proximity, offers a viewing area roughly equivalent to a desktop monitor.

Some Interesting Possibilities

With FaxView, mobile users can send, receive, and store faxes using a cellular or regular phone. You receive faxes simply by having them sent to your phone number, to which you connect FaxView. The system is capable of storing approximately 25 pages of faxes and email in the device’s internal memory.

FaxView has an intuitive user interface which lets you do such things as enlarging or reducing the current fax, along with viewing thumbnail images of all faxes stored in memory. FaxView also has a directory system which allows you to store 100 names and fax numbers offering quick access to commonly used recipients. A cover sheet editor is included as part of the system as well.

For people requiring more than just standard fax retrieval, you can use the system as a fax mailbox. This feature, which operates similar to a voice mailbox, is capable of storing data and fax information together. By employing this fax mailbox, FaxView can now serve as complete email retrieval system, in addition to its more common role. And in cases where a hard copy of a fax is needed, you can direct FaxView to forward the document to any standard fax machine.

A Productivity Boost

In addition to the features we’ve discussed, FaxView offers several additional ways to increase your productivity. For instance, you can have your pager notify you when an important message has reached your mailbox. This means that you can go about your work without having to continually check for new incoming messages.

When on the road and without a wireless link, FaxView can be connected to standard data ports which are now beginning to become common in public phones, airports, and hotels. And in addition to receiving business-related information, FaxView can be used to retrieve news headlines, stock quotes, weather updates, or sports scores. More likely, you will use the system to store important sales data or other information which can then be output to hard copy for a client.

Among the new features in FaxView is a Universal Mailbox Retrieve. This permits users to retrieve faxes, email, or text messages in a single step. Previously, people had to perform each of these separately. A Clipboard is now also a standard feature, allowing users to create an electronic signature, for example, which can then be pasted on the bottom of any fax. It also permits copying and pasting between faxes.

With the addition of features like these, FaxView becomes much more than a standard fax machine. It can now be considered almost a full mobile messaging product, matching some features more commonly found on palmtop computers or dedicated messaging devices.
