Kurta Corp. Establishes Division Focused on Emerging Pen-Based Market

February 18, 1992 — Leveraging its recognized expertise in cordless pen technology, desktop graphics tablets and large-scale digitizers, Kurta Corp. has formed a division focused on the rapidly emerging pen-based computer OEM market.

The Pen Systems Products Division will market a high-performance, low-power pen system, selling direct to system designers and manufacturers for integration with pen-based portable computers and peripherals.

Kurta’s pen system features the cordless Kurta Lite-Touch Pen, which has been specially designed for pen-based computer products. The pen has been designed to support the handwriting, selecting and gesturing motions used with the new breed of computers and software.

The pen system developed by Kurta is provided to pen-based computer designers in an easy-to-integrate OEM package.

A pen system controller, which processes the signals from the pen and serves as the electronic interface to the computer product, consists of just two surface-mountable parts. A signal sensor grid, which detects the pen’s signals, is offered as a custom assembly. The Lite-Touch Pen has been designed to allow for OEM specified appearance and balance customization.

Kurta’s product offering is currently compatible with Go Corp.’s PenPoint, Windows 3.1 for Pen and Computer Intelligence’s Pen-DOS.

Kurta will demonstrate its pen system at Technologic Partners’ Pen Computing 1992 Conference at the San Jose Convention Center, Feb. 19-20, at booth No. 603.

Kurta also announced the appointment of Gary Fitzgerald as vice president and general manager of the new division. Fitzgerald formerly served as vice president, sales, for Kurta’s Tablet and Digitizer Division.

“Over the past year, we have formed joint development agreements with several leading computer companies, working closely with design engineers to create the optimal pen system component,” Fitzgerald explained.

“Our close work with key OEMs has assisted us in understanding — and responding to — important design considerations directed at achieving the specific performance levels required for pen-based computers,” he said.

“Furthermore, the Kurta pen system can be integrated easily and at a very competitive cost,” Fitzgerald said.

Based in Phoenix, Kurta designs, develops, produces and markets desktop graphic tablets, large-scale digitizers and OEM pen system products for the computer-aided design, graphics arts and pen-based computer markets. Kurta, a privately held U.S. corporation formed in 1979, is an affiliate of Mutoh Industrites Ltd., Tokyo.

Kurta is known as an industry-leading innovator and producer of high-performance, high-quality products with exceptionally strong software systems to support user applications. Kurta has led the industry in the development of cordless pen and cursor input devices.
