Microsoft Announces Four Additional Hardware Companies Announce Support for Microsoft Windows for Pens as Microsoft Plans Industry’s Largest Pen Exhibit

Oct. 16, 1991 — Four additional hardware manufacturers have announced their intentions to build computers that will support Microsoft Windows operating system for Pen Computing.

These manufacturers include: Sony Corporation, Matsushita Electronic Co. Ltd., Alps Electric Inc. and Hyundai.

These companies join the list of 29 previously announced hardware manufacturers that will support Microsoft Windows for Pens, bringing to 33 the number of hardware manufacturers who have announced their intent to build computers and display products based on Microsoft Windows for Pen (see following list).

Next week at Fall COMDEX ’91, six of these hardware manufacturers will be present in the Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing booth, No. 1968 in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.  Demonstrating their new machines running Microsoft Windows for Pens will be Tusk Inc., Momenta Corp., NEC Corp., NCR Corp., Samsung Electronics and Sanyo Electric Co.

”The continued support for the Windows platform in pen computing has been outstanding,” said Pradeep Singh, group product manager at Microsoft. ”We’re pleased to present to COMDEX attendees the industry’s largest showcase of pen-based hardware and software applications, and we look forward to the imminent shipment of these products to the marketplace.”

Under development since 1988, Microsoft Windows for Pens is expected to ship early next year, within a few weeks of the release of the Windows operating system 3.1.

Windows for Pens is a graphical operating system designed to provide the best platform to take advantage of the pen. Because Windows for Pens is built on the Microsoft Windows product, the top-selling graphical environment for personal computers, users will immediately be able to use a pen with hundreds of Microsoft Windows-based applications, as well as new pen applications that are being developed.

With the recent addition of four manufacturers, the companies who support the Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing operating environment now includes the following: Alps Electric Inc., AST Research, CalComp Digitizer Products Group, Canon USA Inc., Dell Computer Corp., GRiD Systems Corp., Fujitsu Ltd., Hitachi Ltd., Hyundai, Kyocera Corp., Matsushita Electronic Co. Ltd., Microslate Inc., Mitsubishi Electric Industry Co., Momenta Corp., NEC Corp., NCR Corp., ING. C. OLIVETTI & C., Oki Electric Industry Corp., Samsung Electronics, Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd., Scenario Inc., Seiko Epson Corp., Sharp Corp., Sony Corp., Summagraphics Corp., SuperScript Inc., Telegroup Inc., The Eden Group Ltd., Toshiba Corp., Tusk Inc., Wacom Inc., Wang Laboratories Inc. and Zenith Data Systems.
