NCR Announces Intent to Support GO PenPoint

January 22, 1991 — As part of its developmental efforts to be early to market with pen-based computers, NCR Corp. Tuesday announced its intent to support GO Corp.’s PenPoint, an operating system NCR believes provides significant opportunities for new market applications for pen-based computing.

”We view pen-based computing as a technology reset point which will result in a new paradigm in how and where computers will be used,” said Alok Mohan, vice president of NCR’s Workstation Products Division.

”Specifically, GO Corp.’s PenPoint will enable us to penetrate vertical markets and establish new market opportunities for mobile computers. Our future pen-based products will represent another step in NCR’s strategy to provide total enterprise-wide solutions that support the broadest range of industry standard operating systems and applications software.”

Mohan added that NCR believes mobile pen-based computers will provide the ability to collect and process information faster, more accurately, and in a way that is unobtrusive to the user. For businesses, this translates into an immediate high volume payback potential and significant competitive advantage.

The PenPoint operating system is designed for a new class of mobile computers that will span a wide range of features, functions and sizes from mobile, hand-held devices to desktop tablet systems.

GO is licensing its PenPoint operating system to hardware companies to foster the development of PenPoint computers for new market applications.

The PenPoint developer release, announced today, will give independent and corporate software developers the tools they need to begin working with manufacturers like NCR to address the worldwide market for mobile, pen-based computers.

”The fact that a major systems leader like NCR is developing pen-based hardware that will support our new PenPoint operating system reinforces our belief in the significance of this new type of computing,” said S. Jerrold Kaplan, chairman and co-founder GO Corp.

”NCR is a leading provider to an array of markets, including retail and financial, and we are confident that this experience will help them successfully target these markets with pen-based technology.”

GO, a privately-held company headquartered in Foster City, Calif., was founded in 1987 to develop pen based computing technology.
NCR Corp., with headquarters in Dayton, Ohio, develops, manufacturers, markets and supports business information processing systems for worldwide markets.

PenPoint is a trademark of GO Corp.
