NEC Corp. Licenses CIC Pen Computing Technology Worldwide

June 17, 1992 — Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) (NASDAQ:CICI) Wednesday announced the signing of an agreement granting NEC a worldwide license to use, copy and distribute CIC’s multilingual Handwriter Recognition Systems; Handwriter Dynamic Signature Verification System; PenDOS pen operating environment; and other open-architected, pen computing software technology from CIC.

NEC is a top five worldwide PC producer and supplies over 55 percent of the personal computer systems market in Japan, shipping in excess of 2 million units per year. NEC is a $26 billion manufacturer and worldwide distributor of computer, communications, semiconductor and home entertainment products.

Japan is the second largest computer market in the world. However, because of the difficulty of keyboard usage with the Japanese language, PC usage per capita in Japan is only a fraction of that in the United States and Europe. Pen computing will remove this keyboard phobic problem. As a result, the Japanese PC market is poised for explosive growth.

“CIC is pleased to be working with NEC as part of our worldwide licensing program,” said James Dao, CIC president and chief executive officer. “NEC is an acknowledged industry leader in the development, production and international distribution of desktop and laptop personal computer systems. Their participation in pen-based computing for desktop and portable systems will accelerate the growth of U.S., Japanese and European PC markets.”

CIC is headquartered in Redwood Shores, and has a subsidiary in Tokyo. CIC is a leading, worldwide supplier of pen computing products, including: multilingual (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese) Handwriter Recognition Systems and Handwriter Dynamic Signature Verification, with interfaces for Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing, GO’s PenPoint and CIC’s own PenDOS and MacHandwriter pen operating environments.

CIC’s MacHandwriter, a desktop pen extension to the Macintosh computer, is distributed by Apple Japan Inc.  -0-
