Nestor Announces NestorWriter for the PenPoint Operating System

January 22, 1991 — Nestor, Inc (NASDAQ: NEST) is pleased to announce the development of a version of Nestor’s handwriting recognition technology, NestorWriter(TM), for GO’s PenPoint operating system.

NestorWriter software identifies an individual’s hand-printed characters for pen based computing with exceptionally high accuracy. The system offers user-independent recognition and quickly adapts to a user’s style of writing with real-time learning.  In addition, individuals can train their own unique special symbols as macros — an especially attractive capability for applications in which a type of shorthand is often used, such as stock trading.

NestorWriter will be available from Nestor and is separate from PenPoint.  It is offered as an alternative to the handwriting recognition technology that GO is providing with PenPoint.  “Nestor has proven to be a leader in character recognition technology,” said S. Jerrold Kaplan, GO president and co-founder, “and we’re excited to have their products available for our operating system.”

GO’s PenPoint operating system provides a natural, mobile way to use a pen and computer.  Improving on other computer products, the PenPoint operating system incorporates a familiar notebook metaphor that does not require acquired expertise.  The PenPoint user organizes information on pages, using tabs and a table of contents — a simple, recognizable format that makes the operating system readily accepted by mobile workers, executives and novices.

Because the PenPoint operating system involves an entirely different approach to computing, it opens up a wide range of new opportunities in application design and development.  According to David Fox, president and chief executive officer of Nestor, INC, “GO’s operating platform is exceptional for customers with little or no computer background.  These customers expect a system that can adapt to their individual style, and not force them to change.  Nestor’s neural net technology is perfectly suited to satisfy these expectations.” Nestor, Inc was founded in 1975 by Leon Cooper (Nobel laureate) and Charles Elbaum of Brown University, and later incorporated in 1983.  The company provides commercial solutions using its neural network technology, which emulates the human learning and classification processes.

GO Corporation, a privately held company was founded in 1987 to develop pen-based computing technology.

GO and PenPoint are trademarks of GO Corporation.
