New NCR 3130 Notepad Computer offers Backlit Screen, Larger and Faster Storage; New Pen System Expands NCR Leadership in Mobile Computing

October 5, 1992 — NCR Corp. Monday reinforced its leadership position in mobile, pen-based computing with the introduction of the NCR 3130 NotePad, a feature rich, highly versatile notepad computer.

“The NCR 3130 NotePad computer places a highly flexible, automated, global solution in the hands of people who often work on-the-go and can’t conveniently use a keyboard, allowing them to take advantage of computing power to collect, access and analyze information anywhere, anytime,” said Alok Mohan, vice president of NCR’s Workstation Products Division.

“The NCR 3130 NotePad is designed to naturally fit the way people work, with a pen and ‘electronic paper’, and brings real meaning to the concept of the wall-less office, giving individuals freedom from constraints of time and place while allowing them to connect at will to the enterprise network,” said George Simmons, assistant vice president of NCR’s Pen-Based Computing Business Unit.

The NCR 3130 NotePad enables sales forces, field technicians, service providers and mobile executives to automate static forms, easily access and analyze information, and increase competitiveness in a business world where “just-in-time” information make the difference between success and failure.

Significant New Features

The NCR 3130 NotePad pen-based computer offers significant new features over its predecessor, the NCR 3125, including: A high-contrast backlit screen for greater visibility; A choice of larger and faster hard drives (40MB or 60MB); Greater durability, including shock-mounted hard drives; and Automated data protection “Our customers have been tell-ing us they want a screen easier to read in low light, substantially more memory and improved durability,” said Sim-mons. “As a result, the NCR 3130 is a highly flexible, more reliable and easier to use all-purpose pen computing tablet.”

The NCR 3130 NotePad combines the power and functionality of a personal computer with the intuitive use of a pen. Instead of relying on a keyboard, users can “input data” directly on a digitized screen with a cordless pen.

New Mobile Solution

The NCR 3130 NotePad represents a substantial change in the way millions of mobile workers interact with computers, giving them a more flexible tool for a variety of pen computing tasks, including:

— Mobile salespeople, such as insurance and pharmaceutical sales professionals, carry the NotePad computer programmed with up-to-the-minute product information, price lists, order forms, product availability data and ship dates. They can take, revise, transmit and track orders, eliminating the need to re-enter orders from paper forms. They can use it as an electronic personal organizer and even send and receive faxes.

— Health care professionals, including doctors and nurses, are
using the pen-based system for point-of-care computing power that gives them access to complete patient profiles, al-lowing them to add new information and easily transfer it to a central database. Not only is patient information more complete and more timely, duplicate information collection and recording have been eliminated.

— Buyers access electronic order entry applications directly on the portable NotePad computer. Information includes decision support tools such as vendor history, credit terms, pricing structures and shipping information.

— Real estate appraisers complete appraisals on site using automated forms and computerized information about proper-ty sales, purchases, taxes and liens. By quickly uploading appraisals to lending institutions, the time needed for mort-gage approvals can be reduced. Key Features Key features of the NCR 3130 NotePad Computer include:
