Peripheral Vision Adds PenRight! Support to PenOp Range

January 11, 1995 — At The PDA Forum, Peripheral Vision Ltd. today announced that support for its PenOp signature soft-ware is being extended to include PenRight! Corporation’s pen-based operating environment with a PenOp/SDK (Software Development Kit) for PenRight! Pro.

Many business and regulatory processes remain paper-bound owing to the requirement for a handwritten signature. Pe-nOp allows these signatures to be securely captured, transported, stored and verified on electronic documents, instead of manually on paper. In doing so, PenOp virtually eliminates the costs and delays associated with the procurement, print-ing, distribution, collection, archiving and retrieval of paper, while improving control and maintaining evidential value.

PenOp has thus found widespread applicability in many industries: Insurance, Healthcare, Pharmaceutical, Financial Services, Transportation & Logistics, Banking, Federal and Local Government.

PenOp includes an advanced Bio-metric Signature Verification module which authenticates each signature according to the speed of the pen (as well as the resulting ink image) with an accuracy that far exceeds visual inspection of signatures – and far more rapidly, in large batches if necessary.

In addition, verification of individual signatures in real time offers a natural and easy-to-use re-placement for the password as a means of securing access to machines and networks. Therefore as well as reducing direct costs, PenOp also seeks to reduce fraud arising through unnoticed signature forgery, and to increase the security of computer systems generally.

Typical hardware configurations for PenOp signature capture include pen computers and low-cost digitizers attached to desktop or laptop machines. Signature interrogation or verification can then be carried out on any machine running PenOp – even on a different operating system. Applications simply call upon PenOp as and when required.

PenOp for PenRight! joins versions already shipping for Microsoft’s Windows for Pen Computing and IBM’s Pen for OS/2. “PenOp extends the ability to conduct business electronically into new areas. Whether it is a medical consent form, car rental agreement, insurance policy or credit application that is being filled – they all need to be signed,” said Jeremy Newman, Managing Director of Peripheral Vision.

“The expansion of PenOp onto yet another platform demonstrates the widespread applicability of this key component, and signifies our commitment to bringing PenOp support to all leading software environments.”
