RAM Mobile Data Announces Commercial Messaging Services on its Nationwide Wireless Network System; Premier Partners Introduce Wireless Messaging Products

October 26, 1992 — RAM Mobile Data announced Monday that commercial electronic mail and messaging services are now available on its nationwide wireless packet radio network system.

RAM also introduced a comprehensive support program to help companies develop and market wireless messaging applications. Companies announcing products and services in conjunction with the RAM service launch were designated Premier Partners.

Performance Systems International and RadioMail Corporation announced the availability of wireless communications services that allow users to send and receive electronic mail messages without having to access phone jacks.

Premier Partner companies who announced they are developing new wireless products for RAM’s network system are Ericsson GE, Go Corp., Lotus, Novell, Simware, TEKnique, Telepartner International, and WordPerfect. AT&T, Digital Equipment Corp., and Hewlett-Packard previously announced they are integrating wireless messaging into products under development.

“With today’s announcements, RAMUs Premier Partners take a strong lead bringing to market wireless connectivity for electronic mail, mail-enabled applications, and information services,” said Carl Aron, chairman of RAM Mobile Data. “Our partners are the visionaries who will lead the rapidly growing market to support mobile professionals with wire-less communications.”

Martin Levetin, RAM vice president and general manager of the wireless messaging business unit, said, “RAM’s Premier Partners are leading developers of electronic mail systems and mail-enabled applications. They look to RAM to pro-vide reliable network service for wireless messaging, open standards and APIs, and seamless coverage and transparent roaming for their wireless products and services.”

A key differentiation between RAM and cellular-based wireless networks is network architecture. RAM’s packet-switched radio technology is designed for sending data, not voice, and provides clear, error free transmission of message traffic. The network architecture supports transparent nationwide roaming with store-and-forward features. By June 1993, RAM Mobile Data will provide wireless messaging coverage for 90% of the U.S. urban population.

RAM Mobile Data, a business venture between BellSouth and RAM Broadcast Corporation, is a leader in providing wireless transport for messaging services and products.

The company now operates networks in the United States and the United Kingdom. RAM networks use the Mobitex architecture, an open, international standard for two-way wireless data communications.
