Scriptel and ParaGraph Team Up to Develop State-of-the-Art System for Pen-Based Computing

April 6, 1992 — Scriptel Corp. (NASDAQ:SCRH), a pen-based computer component manufacturer, is teaming up with ParaGraph(TM) International, a producer of cursive handwriting recognition systems, to explore the potential development of a state-of-the-art, pen-based system that will allow OEM customers access to smaller, faster and more accurate digitizer and cursive handwriting recognition products.

Research and development are expected to begin later this month.

For the first time in pen-based computing, digitizer and handwriting recognition technologies will be tightly coupled to create a system that will be easier for OEMs to integrate into a more functional and marketable package. The new system also will aid applications developers to enhance current products and develop future products which take advantage of the increased functionality of the handwriting recognition/digitizing tablet combination.

“Scriptel is continuing to develop and refine products with key product positions that are essential to the pen-based computing industry,” said James W. France Jr., president of Scriptel.

“Digitizer technology with handwriting recognition capability is the wave of the future. Teaming with ParaGraph gives us the opportunity and technological capability to set a pace for the pen computer industry and future design wins.”

ParaGraph International markets handwriting recognition products including CalliGrapher(TM), the first writer-independent recognition system to support both cursive and hand-printed character. This system converts unconstrained, cursive handwriting into a computer-readable form. ParaGraph recently entered into a license agreement with Apple Computer, providing them access to ParaGraph’s present and future text recognition technologies. In addition to that agreement, ParaGraph and GO Corp. have agreed to work together to integrate CalliGrapher into PenPoint(TM), the mobile, pen-based operating system from GO Corp.

“We believe the results of this development venture will be positive,” stated Stepan Pachikov, president and chairman of the board of ParaGraph International. “Our objective is to increase the performance of our combined technologies for existing and future OEM customers. In reviewing many digitizer technologies, we are confident that Scriptel provides the best components for our needs.”

Michael Riemer, vice-president of marketing at ParaGraph, further stated, “ParaGraph is continuing to look for ways to improve its product and distribution channels, and we feel that this endeavor will further enhance our technology for the benefit of our current and future partners.”

Scriptel Corp. manufactures and markets transparent digitizers used in pen-based computing, as well as medical, dental, computer graphics and computer-aided design applications. Scriptel’s digitizer is unequaled in many manufacturing features, including single-layer implementation, noise immunity and low-cost construction. Founded in 1982, Scriptel’s stock is traded over-the-counter and is quoted on the NASDAQ Bulletin Board Service under the symbol SCRH.

ParaGraph International markets leading edge technical innovations in the handwriting and text recognition fields to the international marketplace. ParaGraph International has the exclusive right to market all products developed by Para-Graph JV, a Russian/American Joint Venture formed in 1989. ParaGraph JV is headquartered in Moscow and chartered with the continued research and development for a line of recognition and complementary products. The ParaGraph companies have offices in Moscow and in Boulder.
