Slate Announces Compatability of PenApps, Pen Application Development Environment, with NCR’s 3125 Platform

June 24, 1991 — Slate Corp. Monday announced a co-marketing relationship with NCR Corp. in conjunction with NCR’s announcement of the NCR 3125 pen-based computer.

NCR’s sales force has been trained to sell Slate’s PenApps software and will promote the product to NCR accounts to run on the NCR 3125.

PenApps is an application developmet environment designed to enable the rapid development of software applications for pen computing. The PenApps Developer’s Release is available now for the developer’s release of GO’s PenPoint operating system which runs on the NCR 3125 system. In addition, Slate announced PenApps for Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing on June 10, 1991. Developers can begin work today on pen applications in PenApps that later can be migrated to the commercial release of PenApps for PenPoint or to Windows for Pens.

”We have many customers already developing with PenApps; now with NCR’s 3125 they can release those applications to a first-rate platform, more quickly than we had originally anticipated,” said Vern Raburn, chairman and CEO of Slate Corp.

PenApps is the first application development environment built specifically for corporate development groups and application vendors to combine rapid application creation, simple access to centralized corporate data and excellent pen-oriented user-interface capabilities. These capailities enable developers to automate the capture and dissemination of information by mobile professionals while they are in the field. NCR’s 3125 is the first hardware platform designed for use by these mobile workers.

”PenApps is a powerful tool for creating vertical applications,” said Alok Mohan, vice president of NCR’s workstation products division.  ”The NCR 3125, combined with PenApps, gives companies everything they need to begin reshaping the benefits of pen-based computing.”

On June 10, 1991 Slate also announced a strategic partnership with Traveling Software Inc. Under terms of this partnership, Slate will develop and market products for the PenPoint operating system using Traveling Software’s proprietary communications technology. Traveling Software, based in Bothell, Wash., is the developer of LapLink, the industry standard file transfer system.

The alliance will allow Slate to offer pen-based technology with communications capabilities available to computer users adapting the PenPoint operating system. By combining Slate’s expertise in pen-based systems with Traveling Software’s expertise in portable-to-desktop connectivity, creating the best solution to connecting pen-based and desktop computers will be possible.

The PenApps Developer’s Release is available now for $2,500. Prior to the release of the model 3125, developers can use PenApps on the NCR desktop personal computer family with the GO PenPoint Desktop Developer’s Kit, a version of PenPoint specifically created to support application development on desktop computers. Applications created by PenApps can be moved directly to the model 3125 when it begins shipping later this year.

The PenApps Developer’s Release includes a free upgrade to the commercial release of PenApps and a free, unlimited license for the PenApps Engine for use with the developer’s release of PenPoint.
