Slate Announces Suite of Utilities for GO’s PenPoint Operating System

February 19, 1992 — Slate Corp. Wednesday announced SafetyPen Utilities, a suite of utilities for GO Corp.’s PenPoint operating system.

SafetyPen Utilities provide comprehensive password protection and data security features to protect data stored on the PenPoint system.

“PenPoint’s portability is one of its key benefits — but it also opens the door to new questions like how to keep files confidential on a shared system or how to successfully back up data,” said Vern Raburn, chairman of Slate.

“SafetyPen Utilities are the solution to these problems. They give PenPoint users the peace-of-mind that important data is safe. And since SafetyPen Utilities were designed expressly to work with a pen-based system, they provide an extremely efficient solution.”

“We are very excited about SafetyPen Utilities,” said Jerry Kaplan, chairman of GO Corp. “Its additional data security gives users added insurance that their data will be safe — this is extra incentive for users to get the greatest possible use from their PenPoint systems.”

SafetyPen Password Utility provides a multi-level protection scheme that enables users to control access to their data on various levels. This is very useful in a corporate environment in which one system may be shared by many users. Its multi-tiered password protection scheme provides users comprehensive control over unauthorized access to data.

Passwords can be applied to the entire system, individual notebook sections or individual files.

Passwords can be used to create a hierarchy of access. For example, a corporation might establish a master-level pass-word for system administrators, a group-level password that identifies a particular department and individual passwords for each user.

SafetyPen Password Utility can also create a personalized opening screen that is displayed each time a computer is turned on. By including the users’ name, address, company and phone number on-screen, the computer is easily identified in a group. And if a system is lost, return information is displayed every time the system is turned on.

SafetyPen Backup Utility supports full, partial and incremental backups. Users don’t have to think about when to back up because SafetyPen Backup Utility can be scheduled to perform backups automatically when a computer is plugged into a diskette drive or connected to a pre-determined disk volume.

Since backups are stored in the industry standard PKZip data compression format, backups are faster and less space-consuming.

SafetyPen Utilities will be available in the second quarter of 1992 through Slate Corp. value-added resellers and system integrators. The suggested retail price has been set at $99.
