TechGnosis Inc. Announces SQL DBMS Connectivity Solution for Pen-Based Computing

January 22, 1991 — TechGnosis (tek-no-sis) Inc. Tuesday announced client/server data access for GO Corp.’s PenPoint pen-based computing environment.

The announcement, part of the GO Developer’s Summit, was accompanied by a live demonstration of PenPoint access to Oracle Corp.’s Oracle relational DBMS on a VAX computer.

TechGnosis’ SequeLink data access technology will initially link PenPoint to major relational databases on DEC VAX platforms, with support for a variety of workstation, midrange and mainframe systems to follow.

“We are convinced that there is a strong role for pen-based systems to play in the overall computing environment,” said Paul Carpentier, president of TechGnosis. “To achieve it’s full potential, pen-based computing requires a new soft-ware/hardware architecture, and GO Corp. has successfully met that challenge with the PenPoint operating system.”

“A key ingredient for the success of this new computing model is the ability to access remote data resources independent of connectivity protocols,” Carpentier continued. “Our SequeLink technology provides a single method for data access across several platforms, and we are delighted to extend the identical solution to PenPoint developers and users.”

SequeLink is a comprehensive set of client language libraries and specific application interfaces combined with server and router processes that provide read/write access to major relational database engines. While the initial focus of SequeLink is SQL-based connectivity, the architecture is capable of supporting a wide range of alternative messaging and data transfer standards.

This results in a truly open client/server development environment with capabilities that extend client/server architecture beyond DBMS specific solutions. The SequeLink solution transparently supports a wide range of connectivity protocols, including NETBIOS, TCP/IP, DECnet, LU 6.2 and AppleTalk.

The PenPoint operating system has been developed exclusively to fully exploit the interaction between a pen and a computer. It utilizes a familiar notebook metaphor designed to greatly expand the deployment of personal computers beyond that of current keyboard and mouse-based systems.

“The PenPoint OS is a protected mode, fully pre-emptive multitasking environment built from the ground up to exploit a new user interaction model,” said Carpentier. “These features, combined with its true object-oriented design and implementation of reloadable network protocol stacks, make it ideal for client/server computing.”
