Active Paper Brings Internet Connectivity to Magic Cap Personal Communicators
AUSTIN, Texas — September 18, 1995 — Active Paper(R), a provider of software for personal communicators, today announced the availability of Presto!Mail(TM), its Internet e-mail solution for General Magic's Magic Cap(TM) platform.
Presto!Mail is the first product in Active Paper's Presto!Works(TM) family of Internet connectivity applications for the Sony Magic Link personal communicator and other Magic Cap-based personal communicators.
"Users have typically been 'bound' to the desktop for all their Internet communication needs," says David King, CEO of Active Paper. "Presto!Works products get Internet connectivity off the desktop and into the hands of mobile consumers in a low-cost, easy-to-use form. The result is Internet connectivity on portable, consumer-priced devices."
Presto!Mail gives users of Magic Cap-based products direct access to the global Internet e-mail system through UNIX-based Internet service providers or corporate Internet mailboxes. Presto!Mail allows full use of the Magic Cap environment to send messages with sound, graphics, agents, and applications to other Presto!Mail users through the Internet.
The Personal Communicator Market
"There is increasing demand from users of personal communicator products for affordable, easy-to-use applications that link them to the wide variety of information services," according to Jeff Bone, Active Paper's chief technologist.
In response to this demand, Active Paper is focused on bringing Internet connectivity applications to the growing personal communicator market and has targeted its initial software for Magic Cap-based products.
"The increasing importance of the Internet as a primary backbone for electronic communication and commerce make connectivity to the Internet a valuable application for users of personal communicators such as Magic Link," said Alex Gruzen, director of marketing for Sony's Personal Information Company. "Active Paper's Presto!Works products directly address this user need."
The Presto!Works Suite of Applications
Presto!Mail is the first product in Active Paper's Presto!Works family of Internet connectivity applications for Magic Cap. Additional applications in the suite to be introduced in the future include Presto!Links, a World Wide Web browser, and Presto!News, a news browser for accessing and exploring Internet-based news groups. The full product suite will be available by early 1996.
