Applian Technologies Introduces New Fully Customizable Applications Environment for Windows CE
SAN FRANCISCO — September 16, 1997 — Applian Technologies Inc. announced today that it is introducing CoolCalc(TM), a fully programmable business and scientific calculator for Windows CE handheld devices. CoolCalc was developed using the company's proprietary Personal Touch(TM) applications environment, which allows each customer to alter the layout and function of soft-buttons on the device's screen. For the CoolCalc calculator product, people can build their own custom calculators, menus or formula screens. Some notable features include the ability to create and edit macros (memorized sequences of button presses), assign functions or macros to individual buttons, and move and size buttons using the stylus or keyboard. For less sophisticated users, the product comes with an easy-to-use menu system, with three calculators and several formula screens for common tasks like Time Value of Money calculations and metric conversions.
"Our intent is to allow every user to customize the look and feel of their Windows CE software," said Bill Dettering, president of Applian Technologies. "Windows CE devices have different interface requirements than ordinary computers. The small screen size, right or left-handedness of the customer, and finger or stylus input options make it virtually impossible for a traditional single-interface application to meet everybody's needs. Personal Touch solves this problem, letting our customers modify the size and meaning of on-screen elements directly on the device. CoolCalc demonstrates the power of Personal Touch nicely."
CoolCalc and Personal Touch run on any machine with Microsoft Corporation's Windows CE operating system, which includes devices from Hewlett-Packard, Casio, Compaq, Hitachi, LG, Philips and NEC. The software will be compatible with the upcoming release of version 2.0 of Windows CE, including the new Gryphon and Mercury devices, automobile PCs, smart phones, programmable remote control devices, cash registers, and other appliances.
A free beta version of CoolCalc for CE 1.0 can be downloaded from the company's web site at http://www.applian.com.
