ARDIS Announces Availability of New LAN-based E-mail Software for PDAs on its Nationwide Wireless Network
LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. — November 13, 1995 — ARDIS today announced it is the first two-way wireless data communications network to support Mail on the Run!(tm), a software solution from River Run Software Group that provides remote access to LAN-based electronic mail systems. Using the nationwide services offered by the ARDIS network and Mail on the Run!, mobile professionals can use wireless communicators to access industry-popular e-mail systems, Microsoft Mail and Lotus cc:Mail, and send and receive messages from virtually any location.
Mail on the Run! software enables users to wirelessly send, receive, store, forward and reply to messages on their corporate standard e-mail systems. The software includes filtering capabilities that allow e-mail users to collect only those messages that they want to retrieve. Optimized for wireless environments, Mail on the Run! also includes encryption and data compression capabilities that provide security and cost-efficient messaging.
"Applications like Mail on The Run! will further accelerate the move to wireless, enabling organizations to complement existing corporate communications infrastructures and help users work virtually anywhere, anytime," said Dan Croft, senior vice president, Marketing Operations at ARDIS. "This new solution delivers the ARDIS wireless data advantage to mobile professionals by extending standard LAN-based, e-mail systems to nationwide coverage, delivering messages without long-distance or roaming charges."
According to Trilok Manocha, president of River Run Software Group, "Mail on the Run! helps companies with mobile work forces and individuals on the go to be more productive by making information more readily accessible. The software enables organizations to extend their investments in corporate e-mail systems by allowing mobile professionals to stay in touch with the office and manage business while on the road."
Mail on the Run! is designed on a "client/agent/server" model. Its client software runs on Newton-based systems, such as Motorola Marco Wireless Communicators and Apple MessagePads, and MagicCap-based systems, such as Motorola Envoy Wireless Communicators and Sony Magic Link devices. The software takes advantage of these systems' intuitive user interfaces to offer an easy-to-use application that can be quickly installed.
The Mail on the Run! agent software provides remote access to e-mail systems and can reside on either a Microsoft Windows 3.1 desktop, supporting up to ten wireless users, or on Microsoft Windows NT server, supporting many more wireless users. The Windows 3.1 desktop or Windows NT server, with the agent software, uses standard connectivity to a local area network (LAN) that includes the server-based e-mail system. Mail on the Run! also includes other connectivity options that allow users to access their e-mail wherever they go, even internationally.
