ARDIS Begins Shipping New LAN-Based E-Mail Software

LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. — April 1, 1996 — ARDIS today announced the immediate availability of Mail on the Run!, a wireless solution developed by River Run Software Group that provides remote access to LAN-based electronic mail systems, allowing mobile professionals to easily access their corporate electronic mailboxes while away from the office. Operating over the ARDIS nationwide wireless data network, the software enables mobile professionals to extend two of the most popular electronic mail applications, Microsoft Mail and Lotus cc:Mail, to send and receive messages from virtually any location.

Mail on the Run! software supports the new Envoy 150 device, the next generation wireless communicator announced today by Motorola. The device features an upgraded operating system, enhanced memory and a screen enhanced by a holographic reflector.

"ARDIS is committed to bringing wireless users the mainstream applications they use back at the office," said Dan Croft, senior vice-president, Marketing Operations at ARDIS. "Mail on the Run! brings the most popular e-mail applications conveniently into the domain of the mobile worker. Mail on the Run! quickly extends a worker's corporate mailbox to virtually anywhere."

"E-mail has changed the way we keep in touch with the world," said Trilok Manocha, president of River Run Software Group. "Being out of the office should not mean being out of 'the loop.' Mobile professionals want, and need, to stay in touch with their office LAN e-mail. Our joint effort with ARDIS gives users a single portable mailbox and an easy to use application, all the while driving the evolution of PDAs into powerful, valuable business tools that improve the productivity of the mobile work force."

According to John Sclafani, president and CEO of Wireless World, Bloomingdale, Illinois, a reseller of high-end wireless voice and data equipment, "Combining the proven network coverage of ARDIS and its commitment to customer service with the ease of use of this new software will speed working solutions into the hands of mobile professionals." Mail on the Run! Features With Mail on the Run! software, users can wirelessly send, receive, store, forward and reply to messages on their corporate standard e-mail systems, retaining their LAN mailbox and ID. The software includes filtering capabilities that allow e-mail users to collect only those messages that they want to retrieve. Additionally, it provides access to their mail system's Internet gateway. Optimized for wireless environments, Mail on the Run! also includes encryption and data compression capabilities that provide security and cost- efficient messaging.

Mail on the Run! is designed on a "client/agent/server" model. Its client software runs on MagicCap-based systems, such as Motorola Envoy Wireless Communicators, and Newton-based systems, such as Motorola Marco Wireless Communicators. The software takes advantage of these systems' intuitive user interfaces to offer an easy-to-use application that can be quickly installed.

The Mail on the Run! agent software provides remote access to e-mail systems and can reside on either a Microsoft Windows 3.1 desktop, supporting up to ten wireless users, or on a Microsoft Windows NT server, supporting many more wireless users. The Windows 3.1 desktop or Windows NT server, with the agent software, uses standard connectivity to a local area network (LAN) that includes the server-based e-mail system. Mail on the Run! also includes other connectivity options that allow users to access their e-mail wherever they go, even internationally.
