ARDIS Network Remains Functional During Recent California Earthquake

GREENWICH, Conn. — January 24, 1994 — With many forms of communication disabled during the recent Southern California earthquake, one remained on-line and functional during the disaster — the ARDIS wireless data communications network.

ARDIS, a partnership of IBM and Motorola, is a nationwide wireless data communication service that covers 90% of all U.S. business and more than 400 major metropolitan areas. The fact that it remained functional while conventional telephone lines were inoperable is a testament to its reliability.

"While ARDIS supplies extremely high network reliability to its customers on a day-to-day basis, the importance of that reliability is magnified during a crisis," said Mary Jane Grinstead, senior vice president for sales and marketing for ARDIS. "Despite the severity of the recent California earthquake, the ARDIS network continued to work just fine. Our customers were able to maintain active communications when other communication channels failed."

National Guardian, in conjunction with ARDIS, has been providing the AAGard security transmission system, one of the fastest and most reliable in the industry. Utilizing the ARDIS network, the AAGard security transmission system sends burglar, fire, or other signals in seconds to one of its central monitoring stations for prompt response. Once a signal is received, it is instantaneously acknowledged by the network.

Conventional security systems often depend on telephone lines to transmit security signals. As this situation demonstrates, these lines may be compromised during extreme conditions. With AAGard, there is no compromise in the quality of signal transmission.

AAGard security transmission system strengthens the connection between National Guardian and its customers. "Quality is critical, and an important factor in providing security service to a customer," says George Flagg, president of National Guardian Security Services Corp.

National Guardian is one of the largest and fastest growing security service companies. The company sells, leases, installs, services and monitors electronic security systems that are used primarily to protect businesses and residences against burglary, vandalism and fire. National Guardian provides security services to more than 275,000 customers.
