AT&T Wireless Services to Demonstrate Wireless Connectivity Using Microsoft Windows CE and CDPD

LAS VEGAS — November 18, 1996 — The Wireless Data Division of AT&T Wireless Services will stage special demonstrations of wireless connectivity using the Microsoft Windows CE platform and Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD), also known as "wireless IP," this week at COMDEX/Fall '96 in Booth L862.

Windows CE, Microsoft Corp.'s new scalable operating system platform, is designed specifically for handheld, mobile computing devices where wireless connectivity can speed user access to remote information and applications, such as e-mail and Internet and intranet content.

AT&T will demonstrate wireless IP connectivity on Compaq handheld PCs using Motorola Personal Messenger 100C modems and a specially designed Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) interface created by bsquare development, a Bellevue, Wash.-based software firm specializing in product development and engineering consulting for the Windows CE platform. Specific applications that will be demonstrated include wireless e-mail using Microsoft Pocket Mail and Internet access using Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer.

"The combination of the Windows CE-based Compaq device and AT&T's wireless IP service will offer mobile professionals, as well as several vertical markets, an affordable, easy-to-use PC companion to keep their most important information up to date and close at hand," said Tom Parrish, strategic relations manager with AT&T Wireless Services, Wireless Data Division.

Developed by AT&T and a group of the nation's cellular providers, CDPD allows data to be transmitted over the existing cellular network. Today, AT&T offers CDPD service, also known as wireless IP, to more than 115 million people in 70 markets.
