Chase Manhattan Corp. Selects CIC’s Signature Verification and Pen Input Peripheral Products as Standards for Electronic Commerce Applications

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — April 15, 1996 — Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC)(OTC Bulletin Board:CICI) announced today that Chase Manhattan Corp. has adopted CIC's InkTools software and Handwriter pen input device peripheral as standard components of Chase Manhattan's financial services solutions.

CIC's products will enable Chase Manhattan's customers to embed computer-verified signatures in encrypted documents, adding an extra measure of security for electronic commerce transactions. Chase's first customer of the new solution will be a major U.S. government client.

"This represents a major step forward in promoting secure electronic commerce," said L. Michael McFarland, president and COO of CIC. "By combining CIC's products with existing encryption solutions, Chase Manhattan's customers will be able to process financial documents with the convenience of the electronic medium while retaining the individual accountability associated with traditional paper documents and signatures."

InkTools is a software tool kit from CIC that allows application developers to incorporate the capabilities of capture, display and verification for electronic signatures into PC applications. InkTools includes CIC's SigCheck software which verifies the authenticity of a signature based, not on the image of the signature, but on how the signature was written.

The characteristics analyzed include pen speed, pen acceleration, and stroke sequence. Since people sign their names from muscle memory, CIC believes SigCheck greatly enhances the security of electronic systems by creating a means to uniquely identify an individual on a computer network. InkTools also facilitates the capture and display of compressed, high resolution images of the verified signatures, enhancing the value of electronic documents and transaction records.

CIC's Handwriter is a PC input device peripheral that includes an ergonomic cordless pen and ultra-thin graphics tablet, which plugs into a standard PC serial port, and CIC's highly regarded handwriting recognition software. Handwriter is capable of emulating the functions of both the mouse and keyboard. CIC believes that Handwriter is an effective keyboard complement for navigating, editing documents and capturing signatures in electronic commerce applications.
