CIC and QNX Software Systems Form Alliance to Bring Handwriting Recognition to the Wireless Web

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — January 12, 2000 — Communication Intelligence Corporation (CIC) (Nasdaq:CICI) announced today that it is working on a joint development effort with QNX Software Systems Ltd. to extend CIC's Jot(R) handwriting recognition system to licensees of the QNX(R) realtime operating system. This new development effort is a result of CIC's recent agreement with National Semiconductor (NYSE:NSM) which provides Jot for the Geode(TM) WebPAD(TM), a QNX-based wireless Internet access device for the home or office.

Linda Cambell, vice president of strategic alliances, QNX Software Systems commented, "QNX provides a very complete and proven solution for internet appliances. Jot will add a natural way to interact with these devices. Because QNX is a mission-critical OS, it will bring the Jot recognizer to high-reliability devices used in areas such as healthcare, insurance, manufacturing, and field force automation."

Russ Davis, vice president of product development for CIC stated, "We are pleased to work with QNX to provide support for their embedded windowing system. The microkernel design of their software and the small footprint, high-performance nature of Jot, provides an ideal solution to meet the needs of the rapidly emerging Internet appliance market. With Jot integrated into the Photon microGUI, users can now easily enter text for basic email and browsing."

Initial availability of Jot for QNX is expected to be made in Q1 of this year on National Semiconductor's Geode(TM) WebPAD(TM). QNX OEMs interested in evaluating Jot can contact CIC at [email protected].
