Communication Intelligence Corporation Begins Shipping PenX 1.5, Pen Extensions for Windows 95, 98 and Windows NT 4.0
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — September 14, 1998 — Communication Intelligence Corporation (CIC) (NASDAQ:CICI) announced today that it began shipping PenX(tm) 1.5, pen extensions for Windows(R) 95, 98, and Windows(R) NT 4.0.
PenX is a software tool that provides the extensions to a computer's operating environment, which are necessary to run pen-based applications. The PenX product is currently the only shipping product to provide 32-bit pen extensions for Windows NT 4.0. Fujitsu Personal Systems Inc. (FPSI) is the first customer to license CIC's PenX pen extensions for vertical pen computer offerings.
In an announcement today, FPSI said that it has begun shipping PenX with the Stylistic 1200(R). The Stylistic 1200 is the first commercially available pen tablet to run Windows NT 4.0. CIC will offer PenX pen extensions for licensing to vertical market developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Geoff Walker, VP of Marketing for FPSI said, "FPSI considers CIC a valued partner and ongoing provider of pen-based software solutions. PenX is the first viable alternative to Pen Services that will provide support for mission critical pen solutions in Windows 95, 98 and NT 4.0. We look forward to PenX becoming the new pen interface standard and are pleased to incorporate this technology into our flagship product, the Stylistic 1200 for NT 4.0."
"CIC is proud to offer this robust tool to Pen Computing OEMs and vertical market developers," said Mike Sullivan, VP OEM sales for CIC. "The development of PenX pen extensions enables pen computing applications within all of the 32-bit Windows platforms. Because CIC specifically developed PenX to meet the demands of 32-bit applications, we believe that PenX will offer greater application compatibility than previous pen extension offerings."
PenX is an extension to the Win32 operating systems that provides a common application program interface (API) for pen computing, including support for input device drivers and handwriting recognition engines. To compliment this low-level interface, PenX also includes the 32bit version of CIC's award winning Handwriter(R) Recognition System and new ActiveX edit controls needed for creating pen aware applications with Visual Basic and C++.
