Compaq Launches PC Companion
November 22, 1996 — Compaq Computer today announced the Compaq PC companion, a new breed of product that allows users to access, exchange and organise information with Microsoft Windows-based desktop and notebook personal computers.
The Compaq PC companion supports the Microsoft Windows CE operating system which is an open, standards-based, scaleable platform designed specifically for products that are extensions of Windows-based PCs. By incorporating the Windows 95 interface, Windows CE maximises users' productivity by reducing time spent learning an unfamiliar operating system.
Designed for users who have a portable or desktop computer, the Compaq PC companion offers access to fundamental computing activities, such as synchronising calendars, checking electronic mail, working with Microsoft Word and Excel files, and accessing the Internet. PC companions can also recall information from a primary PC over the user's choice of wired or wireless communications media.
"The Compaq PC companion creates a new class of products that help us become more effective in accessing and using information," said Liz Harbord, senior portable product manager, Compaq Computer UK. "The Compaq PC companion is charting a course by providing users with better access to information from their desktop computers, portable PCs and corporate networks, wherever they are."
Compaq has selected key vendors to provide Compaq PC companion users with computing alternatives for their specific needs. Recognising the popularity of other contact manager, group scheduler, word processor, and spreadsheet applications, Compaq has included DataViz Desktop To Go for Windows CE, which adds the capability to synchronise, import and convert files with numerous word-processing files and other software applications.
Compaq has exclusively licensed River Run Software Group's Mail on the Run! for Windows CE allowing access to Microsoft Mail and Lotus cc: Mail. Mail on the Run!, which comes as standard in every Compaq PC companion box, provides remote access to the world's most popular E-mail systems connecting directly, or remotely, over a landline or a cellular network.
Compaq, as a founder member of the Mobile Data Initiative, believes that GSM data will be the primary communications technology for devices of this category. Additionally, the Compaq PC companion is an ideal platform for independent software vendors to develop customised vertical applications that take advantage of remote computing.
Hardware Features Weighing in at less than one pound (under 450 grams), the Compaq PC companion is available in 2MB and 4MB of RAM models. A 2MB add-on memory module is available to increase the maximum RAM up to 6MB, depending on the model.
The backlit display offers excellent resolution, capable of displaying four levels of grey for easier to read graphics. The display is touch-sensitive so that users can use the stylus or simply touch the screen to easily navigate through the Windows environment, like they would use a mouse on a PC.
PC software and a standard serial interface cable is offered with each unit for connectivity to the PC. Additionally, a type II PC card slot can be used to connect via modem for remote communications or for additional storage capacity. An infrared port is standard for wireless connectivity to a PC or another Compaq PC companion. Battery power is standard with two AA batteries that provide up to 20 hours of life.
Key options available with most models include memory expansion, rechargeable battery pack, convenience cradle, AC adapter, battery charger, power pack, 10MB of flash RAM, carrying case and a slipcase.
Software Features Data synchronisation between the Windows CE Calendar, Contacts and Tasks software and Microsoft Schedule+, is automatic and configurable by the user.
Pocket versions of Word and Microsoft Excel are included with the product serving as companion applications to their PC counterparts. Documents can be shared between the Compaq PC companion and the personal computer using the file translation capabilities of the Microsoft Handheld PC Explorer to manage documents and information through the familiar "drag and drop" metaphor. In addition, Microsoft Windows CE has included a Pocket Internet Explorer browser and Email client for connection to the Internet, and sending and receiving electronic mail.
Connectivity Features Using the serial cable that comes bundled with the Compaq PC companion, users can connect to a PC is through the serial port connection. The Microsoft HPC Explorer application will automatically detect a connected PC companion and begin the process of initiating synchronisation
Remote Networking uses the Point-to-Point protocol for communications between a PC companion and a host computer. The PC companion can be connected either to a corporate LAN through a Remote Access Service account or to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider.
Pricing, Availability and Service The Compaq PC companion is available immediately through traditional Compaq channels in the U.S. only at prices ranging from $499 to $699*.
Compaq will launch the Compaq PC companion in the UK during the second half of 1997. Specifications and prices for the region will be announced nearer that time.
