Eclipse International Announces Industry’s First Microsoft Windows CE Training Classes

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — July 1, 1997 — Eclipse International, Inc., an early provider of high-quality hardware and software solutions for Windows CE platforms, today announced that it is offering the first training classes to teach the basics of the Microsoft Windows CE operating system to developers and OEMs. The first three courses are "Introduction to Windows CE", "Developing for Windows CE for ISVs and IHVs", and "Windows CE and the OEM Adaptation Kit."

"Since we demonstrated the first Windows CE systems at Fall Comdex '96, hardware OEMs and ISVs have shown tremendous interest in learning how to quickly deploy the Windows CE operating system in a broad range of products," said Jim Floyd, Handheld PC product manager, consumer appliance group at Microsoft Corp. "With more than three years of development experience with Windows CE, Eclipse is qualified to offer one of the first training programs to provide much of the fundamental knowledge needed to develop successful Window CE products."

"There is tremendous interest in Windows CE. However, we want to accelerate the learning curve for developers who want to learn how to leverage the potential of Windows CE for a vast array of new and existing applications," said Tom Wong, vice president of marketing at Eclipse International. "By offering comprehensive Windows CE training programs at this early stage, Eclipse is enhancing the infrastructure necessary for rapid growth of the nascent Windows CE industry. Our objective is to provide a solid foundation that enables our customers to deploy Windows CE systems quickly and reliably."

Eclipse International has more than three years of experience working with Windows CE and is one of the few companies in the world with proven expertise at porting Windows CE software to target hardware platforms. Eclipse successfully ported the Windows CE operating system to the "ODO" Windows CE development platform on behalf of Microsoft and Hitachi. This system was demonstrated at Comdex 96 and the Winter Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The company supplies many of the technology building blocks for the Windows CE industry.

Addressing the need for industry-wide education, Eclipse offers complete training programs in key aspects of Windows CE operating system architecture and application development:

Introduction to Windows CE (Course No. CE240)

This session will cover an overview of the Microsoft Windows CE operating system architecture. It will also include an introduction to the first hardware platform – the handheld PC – that uses the Windows CE OS. This session is intended for engineers and executives interested in a general understanding of Windows CE. It will enable engineers and executives to make informed business and technical decisions on incorporating Windows CE in their end products.

Developing for Windows CE for ISVs and IHVs (Course No. CE373)

This session will give you a quick overview of Microsoft Windows CE operating system and an introduction to the first hardware platform (H/PC) that uses the Windows CE OS. This session will provide the attendee with much of the information as CE 240, but will go into much greater depth and discussion about the individual topics related to the Windows CE architecture and developing for Windows CE. The CE373 class also covers development topics related to the SDK (software development kit) and DDK (device driver development kit).

Windows CE and the OEM Adaptation Kit (Course No. CE452)

For developers planning on building an OEM hardware and software platform for Windows CE, this class is the first important step. This class outlines the Windows CE system and software architectures, and includes a detailed discussion of the OEM Adaptation Kit (OAK) for Windows CE version 1.01. The OAK provides detailed information for device and peripheral manufacturers on building Windows CE-based devices and peripherals. This training class is intended for hardware vendors building Windows CE-based products, and will provide you with a solid understanding of the applications for Windows CE and the type of devices that can be built.

Course Schedule and Sign Up

The next classes will be offered on August 5 and 6, 1997. Introduction to Windows CE (Course No. CE240) is a half-day course. Developing for Windows CE for ISVs and IHVs (Course No. CE373) and Windows CE and the OEM Adaptation Kit (Course No. CE452) are full day classes. Course No. CE373 and Course No. CE452 are scheduled on a monthly basis until November, 1997. Course No. CE240 is offered once each quarter.
