EO Offers Personal Interactive Newspaper Service: Free Trial For “Headsup” News Briefs, Delivered Online

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — August 5, 1993 — EO Inc. Thursday announced that HeadsUp, a personal interactive newspaper delivered online directly into AT&T EO Personal Communicators, will be available beginning Sept. 1.

This custom news service, which arrives daily via the EO's built-in communications capabilities (fax and e-mail), is provided by INDIVIDUAL Inc. EO is offering the first month of HeadsUp, a $49.95 value, at no charge to introduce customers to the service.

Subscribers create their own personalized edition of HeadsUp by selecting relevant topics from a list of more than 700 topic categories including high technology, telecommunications, healthcare, financial services, energy, automotive, and defense industries.

Relevant information for chosen topics, which is drawn from more than 200 news and information sources, is presented in a one-page news briefs format. Each provides enough information to understand the content of each news story, and if readers want to know more, they can order and receive the full text within 30 minutes.

"HeadsUp combined with the EO Personal Communicator is a great way for professionals on-the-go to get timely information that's crucial for their business activities," says Pamela Miller, EO vice president of marketing.

"This is the first of many content offerings, such as online services, information retrieval, special interest newsletters and other third party information services for mobile executives, that will be available for the AT&T EO Personal Communicator."

"Working with EO is an exciting extension of our customized news offerings," says Rich Vancil, INDIVIDUAL's vice president of marketing. "HeadsUp can now spread the power of knowledge to the untethered world of the Personal Communicator."

INDIVIDUAL Inc., headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., was founded in 1989 to build and operate an "information refinery" — filtering and customizing information from a broad range of sources.

In addition to HeadsUp for individual business consumers, the company also provides First!, the customized news service for corporations and work groups.

EO Inc., developer of the world's first personal communicator is headquartered in Mountain View. The company was founded in 1991 by AT&T; Palo Alto, Calif.-based venture capital firm Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Byers; Matsushita and Marubeni. The partners contribute technical expertise and funding. In addition, EO has announced a strategic partnership with Olivetti, Europe's leading computer manufacturer.
