First Two-Way Wireless Messaging Application for Magic Cap Developed by RadioMail
SAN MATEO, Calif. — January 6, 1994 — RadioMail Corporation today announced that it is developing the first two-way wireless messaging application for a personal communicator. The product will be delivered on the Magic Cap communicating application platform that General Magic, Inc., introduced today.
With RadioMail, users of Magic Cap personal communicators will be able to wirelessly send messages to, or receive them from, virtually any wired or wireless e-mail address. RadioMail's two- way gateway service uses the RAM Mobile Data or ARDIS radio frequency networks, which cover all major business centers nationwide.
General Magic's Magic Cap technology has been licensed by a number of companies, including Apple Computer, AT&T, Matsushita, Motorola, Philips and Sony, to support new generations of personal communicators. RadioMail for Magic Cap will be available first on a personal communicator being developed by Motorola's Paging and Wireless Data Group. The unit is expected to be introduced in 1994. Pat Richardson, vice president and general manager of Motorola's Subscriber Products Division, said, "RadioMail's two-way wireless messaging is an essential application for the new generation of personal communicators. These devices enable people to send and receive messages at any time, wherever they are. When a message is sent, RadioMail seeks out the user and delivers it wirelessly whenever the device is on. Likewise, the user can respond immediately — there's no need to find a phone."
Marc Porat, General Magic chairman and CEO, said, "RadioMail is just the sort of application that Magic Cap is intended to support. The unique features of the Magic Cap development environment will hasten the availability of personal communicators carried constantly by individuals, professionals and businessmen. RadioMail is designed to deliver messages to the user instantly without user action, not to wait for him to log in to some remote system."
Geoffrey S. Goodfellow, RadioMail chairman and founder said, "The RadioMail corporate strategy is to support two-way wireless message and information delivery to and from all major portable devices. Magic Cap is designed to support two-way wireless communication on small, lightweight portable devices. For that reason, it is important for us to be the first vendor, in conjunction with our partner Motorola, to offer a two-way wireless messaging service on the Magic Cap platform."
RadioMail two-way wireless messaging is already available to users of DOS and Macintosh notebook computers, and Hewlett- Packard Palmtop PCs. RadioMail also provides one-way wireless message delivery both to pagers and to Apple Newtons equipped with Motorola Message Cards.
Motorola's Paging and Wireless Data Group (PWDG) incorporates the company's business activities involved in the design, manufacturing and distribution of paging and wireless data communications products, systems and services for computer companies, carriers and end-users. The group also manages Motorola's share of ARDIS, the data network jointly owned with IBM, along with several other data networks outside the United States.
Motorola Inc., headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois, is one of the world's leading manufacturers of electronic equipment, systems and components for worldwide markets. Additional products include two-way radios, cellular telephones and systems, integrated circuits and discrete semiconductors, defense and aerospace electronics, automotive and industrial electronic equipment, and information processing and handling equipment. Revenues in 1992 were $13.3 billion.
RadioMail Corporation operates a wireless two-way public gateway that provides messages and information to intelligent portable computing devices equipped with radio modems. Subscribers are assigned a Radio Mailbox(TM) in RadioMail's computer center, enabling them to send and receive messages over the RAM Mobile Data and ARDIS two-way wireless networks. Subscribers can communicate with users of a wide range of public and private networks, including corporate mail systems such as Lotus cc:Mail, public access systems such as MCI Mail, ATT Mail and CompuServe; and the worldwide Internet and UUCP/USENET service.
