General Magic and Starfish Software Announce Joint Technology Development Agreement

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — April 28, 1997 — General Magic Inc. (NASDAQ:GMGC) and Starfish Software today announced that they have entered into a joint technology development agreement.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies will work together to integrate Starfish's fully scaleable, Java-based client/server technology into General Magic's upcoming network-based communications service, code-named "Serengeti." General Magic plans to launch a pilot version of the Serengeti service to a limited number of users by the end of May.

At today's session of the Internet Showcase Conference, General Magic will give the first public showing of some of the components of Serengeti (see related announcement). Starfish will join General Magic's on-stage demonstration to show how their technology will be incorporated into General Magic's service.

"We are developing Serengeti to be a completely open system, allowing us to leverage the best technologies from the best companies. This is critical to our partnering strategy," said Steve Markman, General Magic chairman, CEO and president. "Our relationship with Starfish and use of their technology not only provide us with a key piece of Serengeti's architecture but will also help us get to market more quickly."

"Starfish adds value to General Magic's service in two ways," said Philippe Kahn, chairman and co-founder of Starfish. "First, it will give Serengeti a framework for delivering and handling business information. Second, it will allow interaction with that information from multiple devices, including PalmPilot and Windows CE-based machines, as well as desktop PCs."
