General Magic Launches Open Telescript Initiative; Documentation and Tools for Software Development Freely Available
SUNNYVALE, Calif. — October 30, 1995 — General Magic, Inc. (Nasdaq: GMGC) today launched its Open Telescript Initiative, making the Telescript Language reference manual and the first version of the Telescript development environment freely available to software developers. The software development tools and documentation released today enable developers to begin to create and deploy applications based on Telescript technology. In addition, General Magic announced the establishment of the Telescript Developer Greenhouse Program to assist selected developers with innovative uses for Telescript technology.
"The components of The Open Telcscript Initiative made available today underscore General Magic's intent to establish Telescript as a leading technology for enabling the electronic marketplace," said Marc Porat, Chairman and CEO of General Magic. "We invite developers to begin to use Telescript technology to transform today's networks like the Internet into active, programmable networks capable of supporting personalized services that save users time and simplify their experience with today's networks."
Telescript technology is designed to enable users to launch software surrogates, called agents, into the world of electronic services to search for and monitor information and to interact with services as well as other agents on a user's behalf. AT&T launched AT&T PersonaLink Services(SM), a new public network service based on Telescript, in September 1994. In July l995 General Magic alliance members AT&T, NTT, and Sony announced the formation of NTT FAN, a joint venture to pilot an on-line multimedia communications service in Japan using General Magic's Telescript and Magic Cap(TM) platform technologies. France Telecom licensed Telescript technology in October 1995.
The availability of the language reference manual and the initial version of the Telescript development environment allows any interested developer to begin learning about Telescript technology. With the appropriate hardware, developers may also start to develop and deploy Telescript-based applications and services. Examples include applications and frameworks for operators of Telescript-based services such as AT&T PersonaLink, Telescript-enabled software development tools for applications for the Internet as well as the World-Wide web, and other components for Telescript development such as database access software, text search and retrieval access, or mail gateways. General Magic expects to announce terms for commercial Telescript licenses by the end of the first quarter of 1996, and to issue updated releases of the Telescript development environment, including tools for Telescript-enhanced Web sites, starting in the first quarter of 1996. The documentation and software released today and sample applications integrating Telescript technology can be accessed at General Magic's site on the World-Wide Web at http://www.genmagic.com/.
