GeoWorks Signs Bundling Agreement with Samsung

BERKELEY, Calif. — April 16, 1991 — GeoWorks, the Berkeley-based creator and publisher of GeoWorks Ensemble, Tuesday announced a licensing agreement with Samsung Electronics Corporation Ltd., the Korean-based hardware manufacturer, to bundle GeoWorks Ensemble on the Samsung Sensor SP-286, a 12 MHz 80286 personal computer scheduled to ship this month.

"We expect Samsung to become a leading provider of high quality, aggressively priced, mass market hardware solutions for first-time home office and small business computer users," said Brian Dougherty, GeoWorks chief executive officer.

"Our software was designed for home office and small business users, and we believe that through Samsung's mass market channels, we will be able to more effectively reach those people."

"Samsung chose GeoWorks Ensemble for the SP-286 because it is the only Graphical User Interface (GUI) that delivers both ease of use to our first-time users, and high performance on the 286 hardware platform," said Samsung Information Systems America Inc. President, Mike Hong. "Additionally, the integrated applications are packed with features normally found only in stand-alone packages."

GeoWorks Ensemble consists of PC/GEOS, the multithreaded multitasking, windowing graphical environment and seven integrated productivity applications designed to run on the full family of IBM compatible PCs.

Applications include GeoWrite, a WYSIWYG word processor which features scalable outline fonts and supports multiple-column formatting; GeoDraw, an object-oriented draw program with eight drawing tools which allow you to rotate text, objects, fused objects and bitmaps to any angle; Geodex, an address book and automatic phone dialer; GeoPlanner, a flexible calendar and appointment book; GeoComm and America Online telecommunications software, and more.

GeoWorks Ensemble carries a suggested retail price of $199.99.

The Sensor SP-286 features a 12 MHz 80286 processor, 1 MB RAM, VGA color graphics, 40 MB hard drive, 3.5 inch 1.44 MB floppy drive, a 2-button PS/2 compatible mouse and 101 key keyboard. The system will be sold through mass market retail channels and will carry a suggested retail price of $1,399.00.

Samsung Electronics Company Limited (SEC), a Korean-based electronics manufacturer, is a subsidiary of The Samsung Group, a $35 billion international conglomerate, and the 20th largest company in the world.

Samsung distributes its new Sensor line through mass merchandisers in North America. Samsung has sold more than one million personal computers and networking products, and over eight million monitors worldwide.

GeoWorks, located in Berkeley, is the developer and publisher of the acclaimed PC/GEOS graphical operating system and GeoWorks Ensemble application software.
