Interface Consistent With Windows 95, Includes Microsoft Applications, Seamless Desktop Integration, Wired/Wireless Connectivity, Extended Battery Life and Much More
LAS VEGAS — November 18, 1996 — LG Electronics, Inc. today unveiled its new handheld personal computer, Model GP40M. The LG Handheld Personal Computer (HPC) is the world's lightest, smallest and most powerful device to harness the power of the new Windows(R) CE operating system from Microsoft Corporation. With the LG HPC, users can create, edit and share documents with their desktop computers, send and receive e-mail and faxes, browse the Web, and do dozens of other tasks from virtually anywhere.
Designed to fit comfortably in the palm of the user's hand, the new LG HPC weighs less than 12 ounces (340 grams) and measures only 6.5 inches by 3.8 inches by 1.1 inches (168 x 98 x 28.5 mm). With the inclusion of the Windows CE operating system and Microsoft(R) applications, it captures the functionality of Windows 95, the world's most widely used PC computer operating system, in a highly portable size.
"The LG HPC represents the future of the personal electronics and personal computer industries," says LG Electronics spokesperson. "The convenience, reliability and affordability of personal appliances are now combined with the digital intelligence and global access of personal computers. We see this as the beginning of the next wave in communications."
"We are pleased to be working with LG Electronics in delivering this new category of computer products," said Craig Mundie, senior vice president of the consumer platforms division at Microsoft. "With Windows CE, we have created a standard from which consumer devices can talk to each other, and we are pleased that the LG HPC will be one of the first to market that show this new technology."
Functionality of a Desktop PC
The LG HPC captures the look, feel and functionality of today's most powerful desktop computers. With the Windows CE operating system, the handheld unit can be easily used by anyone familiar with Windows 95.
All models come with pocket versions of several top-selling applications, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, and a personal information manager (PIM) compatible with Microsoft Schedule+. Automatic data synchronization and conversion features mean that data and documents can be moved easily between desktop PCs running these programs and the LG HPC.
Infrared transmission and e-mail capabilities are built-in, as well as a wireless data communication package that enables two-way remote messaging throughout the U.S. Optional add-ons include a fax/modem function. Future models will include special chip sets allowing remote communications through cellular telephone networks.
Under the Hood
The LG HPC is powered by a chip set that includes a 32-bit RISC processor, and companion multimedia chip developed jointly by LG Electronics and Hitachi. A proprietary power management chip quadruples battery life in suspend mode, enabling the unit to store data for up to 120 days. The unit is powered by two AA batteries or an optional Ni-MH rechargeable battery.
Availability, Price
Commercial quantities of the LG HPC are scheduled for release in the United States in January 1997. The LG HPC will be available at computer specialty stores and other retail outlets. Pricing was not available at press time.
