ITE – Integrated Technology Express Inc. – to offer High-Performance Intelligent Peripheral Controllers to Support Windows CE based Hand-held PCs
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — July 15, 1997 — ITE (Integrated Technology Express, Inc.) has announced the first product in its IPC series: IT8101, which integrates the peripheral functions required by the second-generation H/PCs.
The IT8101 supports Windows CE version 2.0, and includes a color LCD controller, an IrDA controller, a UART, a standardized I2C interface, an interrupt controller, an RS-232C controller, a PCMCIA/CompactFlash card controller, a software modem interface, and timers. The IT8101 was jointly developed with Hitachi and supports Hitachi's SuperH bus. (Reference: Hitachi America, Ltd. Semiconductor & I.C. Division's June 30 chipset announcement at http://www.halsp.hitachi.com/news/news.html).
Paired up with Hitachi's SH7709, SH-3 32-bit RISC Microprocessor, the two chips deliver full second-generation H/PC solutions and could be adopted for many more applications such as Internet TVs and Internet phones. The IT8101 is packaged in 208-pin LQFP and sample shipment will be available beginning August 1997.
IT8101's integrated LCD controller sustains 256 simultaneous colors from a palette of 256K colors at a 640 x 240 resolution. Infrared communication is provided by a IrDA 1.1 standard compliant controller enabling communication over an IR channel at up to 4 Mbps. The IPC also offers data communications at up to 115.2Kbps with the 16650 standard compatible RS-232C controller.
Additionally, the IT8101 has integrated a PCMCIA Card controller which connects two slots either for two PCMCIA cards; or for one PCMCIA card and one Miniature/CompactFlash card. The IT8101 offers standby mode and module stop functions for power management, and the dedicated power management timers for peripherals will reduce power drain when peripherals are not in use. Finally, the IT8101 also features an AFE (Analog Front End) interface to enable implementation of a software, 33.6 Kbps modem.
The IT8101 is the first in ITE's IPC series of highly integrated, high-performance, and low-power consumption peripheral controllers to support the Windows CE applications, for which ITE is committed to being a leading ASSP supplier. In addition to H/PCs, other products under planning include Wallet PCs, Auto PCs, Micro-notebooks, Internet TVs, and Web-phones.
