J.D. Edwards Information Technology Leadership Award for Collaborative Innovation Given to Jeff Hawkins, Founder of Palm Computing
WASHINGTON, D.C. — June 3, 2003 — Industry Veteran Recognized for Leading Role in Facilitating the Sharing of Ideas, Information, Goods and Services through Technology
J.D. Edwards has awarded the Information Technology Leadership Award for Collaborative Innovation to Jeff Hawkins, founder of Palm, Inc.
Mr. Hawkins was selected for the award by a nominating committee of leaders from the education, technology and government sectors. The award was presented as part of the annual Computerworld Honors awards program Monday night in Washington, DC.
"Mr. Hawkins' contributions to the field of information technology have forever changed the way people communicate and businesses operate," said Bob Dutkowsky, chairman, president and CEO of J.D. Edwards. "Through his leadership role in redefining computing with the revolutionary Palm handheld, Mr. Hawkins has demonstrated the essential role of technology in facilitating the sharing of disparate ideas and information among many people and businesses. Today, Palm computers are the most successful handheld computers in the world, with an estimated 70 percent market share. That success is due to Mr. Hawkins' innovative spirit combined with an unwavering commitment to collaborate with others who could round out his vision and complement his skills."
In 1998, Mr. Hawkins left Palm Computing to co-found Handspring with Donna Dubinsky, where he currently serves as chairman and chief product officer. An industry veteran with nearly 20 years of technical expertise, Hawkins currently holds nine patents for various handheld devices and features. His vision for handheld computing dates back to the 1980s, when as Vice President of Research at GRiD Systems Corporation, he served as principal architect and designer for the GRiDPad and GRiD Convertible. Prior to that, he held key technical positions with Intel Corporation. He is also the founder and executive director of the non-profit Redwood Neuroscience Institute, a scientific research institute working on theories and mathematical models of brain function.
