M-Systems Introduces TrueFFS for Microsoft Windows CE; M-Systems TrueFFS for Windows CE Enables Data Sharing Between Personal Computers and Consumer Electronics Devices
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — November 18, 1996 — M-Systems Inc., a pioneer in flash data storage solutions, introduced today TrueFFS for Microsoft Windows CE.
TrueFFS, the leading implementation of the FTL industry standard for flash management, will enable data transportability between portable consumer products, such as digital cameras and PDAs, and personal computers. Windows CE is Microsoft's next generation operating system for hand-held electronic applications and Internet computers.
"Microsoft is pleased by M-Systems commitment to the Windows CE platform," said John Magill, director of marketing, consumer appliances group at Microsoft. "FTL is an important enabling technology for transferring data from portable Windows CE-based devices to Windows-based desktop computers. M-Systems' plans to release TrueFFS for Windows CE will help expand the new category for handheld PCs."
FTL allows linear flash PC Cards to fully emulate hard drives, bringing high performance, low power consumption data storage to portable applications. Based on the data format of TrueFFS, M-Systems' patented core technology, FTL eliminates ATA's hardware overhead, therefore presenting a more cost-effective solution for flash data storage. TrueFFS also supports on-board flash with full XIP (eXecute-In-Place) compatibility, providing the most reliable data storage media.
"We are happy that M-Systems and Microsoft cooperated to enable FTL flash support for Windows CE devices," stated Sheldon Safir, NEC Computer Systems director of marketing. "Offering FTL-based Flash Cards will present a cost-effective solution to the users of our revolutionary new MobilePro HPC hand-held device."
"M-Systems led the industry in the development and adoption of the FTL standard, and continues to be on the cutting edge by bringing FTL to the consumer electronics market. Introducing a Windows CE version of TrueFFS, upon the introduction by Microsoft of this new platform, is evidence of our long-term commitment to large OEMs' needs in this evolving market," said Dana Gross, president of M-Systems, Inc. "TrueFFS will significantly enhance the practicality and flexibility of portable consumer devices, making them more attractive to end-users."
TrueFFS for Windows CE will be available by the first quarter of 1997, at a cost of approximately $ 2 in OEM quantities.
