Metrowerks Announces CodeWarrior Tools With PersonalJava Technology Provide Commercial Advantage for Developers Creating Applications for Symbian OS Mobile Phones

AUSTIN, Texas & LONDON — January 29, 2002 — Developers of applications for mobile phones now have the advantage of a full suite of professional development tools created by Metrowerks. The toolset, CodeWarrior(R) Development Tools for Symbian OS(tm) with PersonalJava(tm) Technology, allows developers to create, edit, compile, debug, emulate and deploy applications for mobile phones that are built with Symbian OS, an operating system for next generation mobile phones.

Early in 2001, Metrowerks and Symbian announced an agreement in which Metrowerks would design, develop and deliver a range of development tools to enable Symbian OS licensees and developers to create compelling applications for Symbian OS phones. This release is the first in a series of CodeWarrior products targeting Symbian OS phones, and the first of many CodeWarrior wireless development products that will become available this year.

"Metrowerks is a leading vendor of development tools in the wireless space. These CodeWarrior tools for Symbian OS demonstrate Metrowerks' ability to enable the rapid development of professional quality applications and services," said Mark Edwards, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Symbian.

CodeWarrior Development Tools for Symbian OS with PersonalJava Technology provide a tightly integrated suite of tools that will be familiar to developers currently using CodeWarrior tools to create wireless applications for Palm OS(tm), J2ME(tm) technology or the ARM platform. These developers will easily be able to use these tools from Metrowerks to develop content and other applications for Symbian OS phones, taking advantage of the richer, tightly integrated and advanced wireless computing and communications capabilities that Symbian OS offers.

"Metrowerks' commitment to the developer community is evident in our support of leading platforms like Symbian OS, and in our support for emerging standards," said John Smolucha, vice president of marketing, Metrowerks. "In addition to technology, Metrowerks provides services that allow developers to be competitive in today's changing marketplace."

Future CodeWarrior products for Symbian OS will support C++ development, including debugging of application and kernel code on Symbian OS devices and emulators, and will include further enhanced support for Java technology.
