CodeWarrior 7 includes many new features including the following:
– the new universal 'plug-and-play' CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment (IDE) which allows programmers to pick and choose among:
– three programming languages, C, C++ and Object Pascal to build application binaries for the following operating systems:
– Mac(TM)OS-based apps running on the Power Macintosh(TM);
– Mac(TM)OS-based apps running on the 68K-based Macintosh(TM);
– Windows(TM)95 or Windows NT(TM)-based apps running on x86 processor-based PCs; and
– Magic Cap(TM)OS-based apps running on Sony Magic Link(TM) or Motorola Envoy(TM) personal communicators
– new PowerPC(TM) instruction schedulers for the latest PowerPC-based Macintosh(R) computers running on PPC603 and PPC604 processors
– a minimum five percent improvement in PowerPC optimization over CodeWarrior 6 released in May, 1995.
– a 400 percent decrease in build times for all CodeWarrior MPW(R)-based tools
– new state-of-the-art debuggers which for the first time allow a programmer to use one application to debug 68K-based code and PowerPC-based code
CodeWarrior 7 Gold includes Metrowerks' new Mac-hosted Win32 backend and linker that support development of Win32-based applications using Macintosh-compatible computers. Metrowerks C/C++ for Win32 also supports 2-machine debugging of applications running remotely on Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 95 operating systems from Macintosh-compatibles. In addition, Metrowerks has licensed Microsoft Corporation's Microsoft Foundation Class application framework for x86-processor development allowing Mac-hosted CodeWarrior developers to build MFC-based applications on the Macintosh for the first time.
CodeWarrior 7 Gold incorporates the Magic Cap development tools, including a developer release object compiler and linker, that work within the CodeWarrior IDE. CodeWarrior 7 Gold also includes the CodeWarrior Magic/MPW toolkit and General Magic's Magic Cap object-oriented development environment. The Magic Cap operating system runs on the Sony Magic Link Personal Intelligent Communicator and the Motorola Envoy Wireless Communicator.
Metrowerks' new compilers and linkers for CFM68K support the new runtime architecture from Apple Computer designed for OpenDoc development as well as future operating systems. These tools are provided in support of OpenDoc development on Macintosh. Metrowerks already supports OpenDoc development on PowerMacintosh.
CodeWarrior 7 features the usual array of additional development tools including Apple Computer's MPW v 3.3, MacApp(R) v 3.1.4, MacApp v 3.3.a4, and MacApp2PPC. Under the Microsoft agreement, Metrowerks will distribute the Microsoft Foundation Classes with CodeWarrior 7 Gold as part of its Mac-hostedWin32 development tools for Windows 95 and Windows NT on the x86.
A new CD-ROM-based, low-price version, the CodeWarrior Programming Starter Kit, is also being launched at AppleExpo Paris. This new US$ 79 product will allow entry-level programmers to get started programming on the Macintosh and thus open a new market for Metrowerks. Included on the Starter Kit CD-ROM are two trade books, the "Programming Starter Kit for Macintosh" by Jim Trudeau and "C++ Programming with CodeWarrior" by Jan L. Harrington.
"CodeWarrior 7 is a major release for Metrowerks as we have delivered what we think is the most versatile development environment in the world supporting development for several operating systems and microprocessors in a new universal 'plug-and-play' IDE," said Greg Galanos, President and CEO of Metrowerks. "We hope the very aggressive price of the new CodeWarrior Programming Starter Kit will encourage new developers to migrate to the Macintosh platform."
"We have found the Metrowerks tools to be incredibly robust and complete while providing a fast turn around environment," said Sean Parent, Senior Computer Scientist – Photoshop at Adobe Systems Inc. "Since moving to CodeWarrior, our build times have been cut to less than one-quarter of what they were and our productivity has increased dramatically."
"We're excited to be working with Metrowerks and the new CodeWarrior 7 release," said John Wilczak, founder and CEO of HSC Software. "Metrowerks is aggressively pushing forward with advanced development tools. This new release will give us incredible performance in optimizing our graphics and imaging solutions for the Power PC and Windows 95/NT platforms." Pricing and Availability
