Metrowerks Ships Source-Code Control Manager for Macintosh: Technology Licensed from Microsoft
SAN FRANCISCO — January 9, 1996 — Metrowerks, Inc. (TSE,ME: MWK) today announced that Metrowerks CodeManager, a Macintosh-based source code control system based on Microsoft technology and compatible with Microsoft Visual SourceSafe version 4.0, is now shipping.
Microsoft's Visual SourceSafe product is rapidly becoming the standard for programming project management. To ensure cross-platform management with its system, Microsoft has chosen Metrowerks to develop, market and support the Macintosh client for Visual SourceSafe.
"Metrowerks is one of the leaders in the Macintosh development tools market," said Roger Heinen, senior vice president, Developer Division, Microsoft. "The company is a natural Microsoft partner for providing the Macintosh expertise for a cross-platform source code control system."
Metrowerks' CodeWarrior is the leading Macintosh development tool on the market for 32-bit development," said Jean Belanger, chairman, Metrowerks. "The introduction of CodeManager adds to our professional programming tools solutions by offering customers an easy way to manage software development projects."
Macintosh Developers Get Professional-Level Development Tool
With today's computing power and mixed operating environments, the task of developing applications software has grown tremendously complex. Developers must work in groups to manage millions of lines of code, all the while maintaining source-code and version control. CodeManager aids this process by acting as a central repository that tracks version control during the development process.
CodeManager maintains source code security while encouraging code reuse within and across project teams. The product allows source files to be checked in and out easily, with large comment areas to describe the changes between versions. Storage space is preserved by using reverse-delta versioning, which keeps the latest file and just the changes between each previous version.
Metrowerks' CodeManager keeps track of the relationships between files and projects, so files are stored once even if used by multiple project teams. CodeManager can accommodate individual file sizes of up to 67 MB, and projects with over 8,000 files. An entire multi-project database may contain nearly four billion files.
"We've been using the beta version of Metrowerks' CodeManager product for several months, and it has been a definite asset in our software development efforts," said Greg Gilley, engineering manager for imaging and video, Adobe Systems. "CodeManager is a professional-class programming tool, and we expect that it will speed our development process significantly. We're also enthusiastic about Metrowerks' responsiveness and commitment to customers; they've been great to work with."
"We have a cross-platform environment at JP Morgan, and continually have large development projects in process," said Ron Allen, vice president, JP Morgan. "CodeManager is a compelling solution for us: it is a solid product based on proven technologies; it has the support of two players in the industry that we have come to rely on; it is cross-platform; and now it can be hosted on the Macintosh, which is a necessity for those developers in our environment who use the Macintosh as their primary development tool. We view this as an extremely positive step in the realization of cross-platform development."
Price, Availability and System Requirements
CodeManager is currently shipping. The product is priced at $ 399 and includes two additional CD-ROM updates. CodeManager is available from Metrowerks and Metrowerks authorized resellers.
