Metrowerks Ships the First Development Tools for Symbian OS V7.0
AUSTIN, Texas — March 11, 2002 — CodeWarrior(tm) Tools Support System Software and Application Development for the Next Generation of Mobile Phones Based on Symbian OS
Metrowerks today announced the availability of the first development tools designed specifically for the new Symbian OS(tm) v7.0. CodeWarrior(tm) Development Tools for Symbian OS, Professional Edition, Version 1.0 was developed in partnership with Symbian and will be used by Symbian, its licensees, and their partners to create system software and applications for the next generation of Symbian OS phones.
The toolset enables wireless developers to develop, build and debug C++ and PersonalJava(tm) operating system components and applications, all within the same Integrated Development Environment (IDE), for Symbian OS mobile phones. The CodeWarrior IDE allows developers to easily plug in device specific SDKs to support multiple Symbian OS configurations including phone designs from different Symbian OS licensees.
"Metrowerks' CodeWarrior for Symbian OS is an essential part of our strategy to give developers world class software development tools for our P800 multimedia smartphone," said Cyrus Allen, head of global business development and alliances for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications. "Our relationship with Metrowerks gives developers a competitive edge, helping them avoid configuration headaches and get straight to developing compelling content."
C++ support includes Symbian OS project control, source-level interoperation with legacy tool chains, as well as batch build, software build and debug on host-based Symbian OS emulators and ARM(R) processor-based Symbian OS devices and reference boards. PersonalJava support is also included.
"Metrowerks' expertise in C/C++ tools in cross-compilation environments, combined with the flexibility of the CodeWarrior IDE, are key to our collaboration on tools for Symbian OS development," said Mark Edwards, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Symbian. "CodeWarrior tools will play a central role in creating the next generation of Symbian OS phones, applications and services."
Future releases of CodeWarrior Development Tools for Symbian OS will deliver tighter integration with Symbian OS features, integration of Metrowerks' debugger for target device code, kernel debugging, support for the J2ME(tm) Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP), and further elimination of command-line tasks.
"Our commitment to the developer community is evident in our support for emerging standards and for leading platforms like Symbian OS," said Jim Welch, president and CEO, Metrowerks. "CodeWarrior, like Symbian OS, is the solution of choice for application developers looking to deliver innovative applications for wireless devices. Along with tools, Metrowerks also provides services that allow companies targeting Symbian OS development communities to gain a critical competitive edge in today's rapidly changing marketplace."
In January, Metrowerks released CodeWarrior Development Tools for Symbian OS with PersonalJava Technology, which allows developers to create J2ME applications for Symbian OS phones.
CodeWarrior Development Tools for Symbian OS, Professional Edition, will be on display at the Sony Ericsson booth (stands D40-D60) at the CeBIT 2002 conference in Hannover, Germany, March 13-20.
