Metrowerks to Add Support for Windows CE to CodeWarrior for NEC Embedded Systems
AUSTIN, Texas — April 28, 1997 — NEC and Metrowerks sign development agreement to support Windows CE on NEC's VR-Series(TM) of Embedded Microprocessors Metrowerks Inc. (NASDAQ:MTWKF)(TSE/ME:MWK), one of the world's leading providers of software development tools, announced today that the company has signed a development agreement with NEC Electronics Inc. by which Metrowerks will add support for the new Windows(R) CE operating system from Microsoft(R) to its previously announced software development environment, CodeWarrior(R) for NEC Embedded Systems.
CodeWarrior for NEC Embedded Systems is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) slated for release later this year that will include compilers and debugging support for NEC's VR and V800(TM) Series. Metrowerks will provide support for the development of Windows CE applications running on the NEC VR-Series embedded processors.
NEC's VR-Series is a family of 64-bit microprocessors based on the MIPS(R) RISC instruction set, used in a wide variety of consumer electronic devices, including office automation and networking products, interactive/Internet televisions and information appliances. As part of the development agreement, Metrowerks will modify its MIPS compiler architecture to support the Microsoft ABI for Windows CE and provide source-level debugging capabilities for NEC's VR 4000(TM) Series.
Additionally, CodeWarrior for NEC Embedded Systems will include Metrowerks' CodeWarrior x86 compiler technology, offering developers the opportunity to build and test WinCE executables on WindowsNT(TM) desktop. This provides a convenient simulation environment using an off-the-shelf WindowsNT computer as well as advanced debugging capabilities for developing applications based on NEC's VR-Series of MIPS RISC microprocessors.
"Metrowerks is committed to offering developers on NEC processor architectures a full range of development options," said Greg Galanos, president and chief technology officer of Metrowerks. "The addition of Windows CE support to CodeWarrior for NEC Embedded Systems, as well as the addition of a simulation option through our x86 technology offers a very powerful, yet reasonably priced solution to NEC customers and OEMs interested in shipping Windows CE hardware and software."
"Our agreement with Metrowerks underscores our commitment to providing customers with state-of-the-art technology and support," said Keiji Matsumoto, general manager of micro products. "We are pleased to see the inclusion of Windows CE support to CodeWarrior for NEC Embedded Systems, which broadens the opportunities for software developers targeting the NEC microprocessors."

CodeWarrior for NEC Embedded Systems is scheduled for release later this year for an SRP of US$ 699. Hosted on both Windows 95/NT and Mac(R) OS, CodeWarrior for NEC Embedded Systems will be available from Metrowerks and Metrowerks authorized distributors.
