Oracle Corporation ships Oracle Glue for Windows

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — April 27, 1993 — Oracle Corporation today announced the immediate availability of Oracle Glue(TM) for Windows, the latest component of the Oracle Cooperative Development Environment (CDE).

Oracle Glue is the adaptable, portable, integrated application programming interface (API) that will help developers create the next generation of client/server applications. Oracle Glue for Windows Version 1.0 provides a consistent, high level programming interface between applications on Windows PCs and a mix of data sources including the ORACLE RDBMS and IBM DB2, Oracle*Mail and the Sharp Wizard palmtop organizer.

A High Level API for Today's High Level Scripting Languages

''Client/Server computing has stalled in many organizations due to the lack of available tools,'' said Marc R. Benioff, corporate vice president of Oracle's New Technology Division. ''Now, with Oracle Glue, almost any application can become a client to a database, a mail system, or even a palmtop computer.''

The Adaptable, Portable, Integrated API

Among middleware solutions emerging today, Oracle Glue is uniquely adaptable, portable, and integrated. Oracle Glue is adaptable because it will access data from a full range of databases, mail systems, file systems and even palmtop computers. It is portable because it will run on a variety of graphical user interfaces including Windows and Macintosh on the desktop, Motif on Unix, and even Pen Windows and PenPoint on mobile computers. It is integrated because it will work in a consistent, high level way within the scripting languages of corporate standard tools that users demand. Oracle Glue Version 1.0 for Windows will work within the Excel macro language and Visual Basic and it will also work within products like Lotus 123 or Ami Pro that can utilize DDE, dynamic data exchange, or call a DLL, a dynamic link library.

Oracle Glue delivers on the Oracle Cooperative Development Environment's promise of openness by allowing developers to use a variety of off-the-shelf Windows applications to connect to their data.

The Oracle Glue for Windows software development kit is available immediately. It will also be made available as part of the CDE product bundle which is scheduled to ship in June 1993.
