PC EXPO Breaks Exhibitor And Attendance Records; Computer Industry’s Most Important Trade Show for New Technology Attracts More Than 120,000 Attendees; 800 Exhibitors Showcase Thousands of Products

NEW YORK — July 1, 1994 — More than 800 exhibitors showcased the latest products in personal computers and information technology at the Twelfth Annual PC EXPO(R) in New York, as the computer industry's most important trade event for new technology wrapped up its three-day run Thursday at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. The show and conference attracted 120,283 attendees, who jammed all four levels of the Convention Center.

New technology at PC EXPO encompassed pen-based and voice-activated computers, Pentium(R) and Power PC technology, personal digital assistants (PDAs), CD-ROMs, online services, and the entire spectrum of personal computing and converging technologies. Adobe Systems, AST, Borland, Compaq, Dell, Digital Equipment Corp., Gateway 2000, Hewlett- Packard, Hertz Computer, IBM, Intel, Lotus, Mitsubishi, Motorola, NEC, Okidata, Sharp, Sony, Software Publishing, Samsung, Symantec, Toshiba, WordPerfect, Xerox and Zenith Data Systems were among the hundreds of exhibitors announcing new products.

PC EXPO opened June 28 with a major keynote presentation by Andrew S. Grove, president and CEO of Intel Corporation, transmitted by satellite to Paris, Munich, London and Birmingham in the UK, and Bear Stearns in New York City. Dr. Grove described "The Ubiquitous PC" — the proliferation of the PC as the information appliance of the '90s — technology in every facet of business, entertainment and society.

During PC EXPO, the I2 Advance Conference explored issues in the coming convergence of computer networking, telecommunications, multimedia and video. The I2 Technology Center, on the show floor, provided hands-on demonstrations from companies such as Apple Computer, Amusitronix, IIN/Redgate Communications, NYNEX, PictureTel and Scientific Atlanta. The full Interactive Information Expo (I2)(SM) exposition and conference will take place December 6-8 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

Intel Corporation also sponsored the four-day Intel World Chess Grand Prix with the Professional Chess Association (PCA), featuring 16 international grandmasters squaring off across the chess board. The tournament was dramatically staged, with expert commentary, large projection screens, and computers tracking the moves of each player for the audience.

Specialized pavilions at PC EXPO focused on dynamic sectors of the computer industry such as mobile computing, Windows applications, multimedia and technology for the information systems buyers from New York's financial community, who attend the show in force. In addition, there was an Association and User Group Pavilion.
