PhatWare Releases CalliGrapher 7 Handwriting Recognition Software, Offering Powerful Features to Improve User Efficiency

LOS ALTOS, Calif. — November 25, 2003 — PhatWare Corporation, a leading provider of software products and professional services for mobile and desktop computers, today announced the release of CalliGrapher 7, the first major release of the company's award-winning handwriting recognition software in two years. Among the many productivity improvements found in CalliGrapher 7 are a new Configuration Manager that lets users to create and modify multiple CalliGrapher configurations, and a new customizable on-screen, 24-button keyboard for faster entry of specific or unique characters.

CalliGrapher has developed a large and loyal following since its 1993 debut on Apple Newton MessagePad. Four years later, in 1997, CalliGrapher was introduced on Microsoft Windows Powered Handheld PCs. Winner of numerous awards including multiple Pocket PC Magazine Best Application Awards as well as Best of Comdex, CalliGrapher uses fuzzy logic and neural net techniques to recognize any handwriting style — cursive, print, or mixed — written in any application window, then converts the characters into digital text for use in the target application.

Certified as a Designed for Microsoft Windows Mobile product, CalliGrapher 7, despite a range of new functionality, actually uses a smaller memory footprint than earlier versions. Its upgrades include:

— New Configuration Manager for multiple configurations. Customizable to user needs, multiple configurations enable users to easily switch between different spell checker dictionaries, recognition engines, or custom keyboard layouts.

— Customizable, 24-button Soft Keyboard, accessible by pen or toolbar button, that helps users quickly find and input select characters not identifiable through automatic recognition.

— New Customizable Toolbar that lets users gain quick access to their most commonly used commands.

— Improved Correction Window for easier recognition corrections.

— Full On-Screen Keyboard with 10 pre-defined layouts for eight Western European languages.

— 40-Color Ink Palette

— Improved Ink Speed and Recognition Quality

"CalliGrapher 7 takes mobile handwriting recognition to a new level of efficiency and convenience," said Stan Miasnikov, president of PhatWare Corp. "Our ongoing dialogue with users has enabled us to identify and implement the tools and features that will make CalliGrapher faster, more intuitive, and more flexible than ever before."
