Philips Electronics to Offer Handheld Computing Products Based on Microsoft Windows CE Platform

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — September 16, 1996 — Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG) today announced it will introduce handheld computing products based on the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) CE platform to provide business professionals with a lightweight, portable and familiar solution for mobile computing, communications and information management.

"When we looked for a partner to support our mobile computing initiatives, Microsoft was the obvious choice," said Doug Dunn, Chairman and CEO of Philips Sound and Vision. "Philips has an unmatched track record when it comes to setting and supporting standards. We're confident that this platform will become the industry standard and enable the handheld computing market to grow at a rapid pace."

The Philips handheld computing products are being developed in the Silicon Valley by the Philips Mobile Computing Group, a division of Philips Electronics North America Corporation. "The Microsoft Windows CE platform enables the development of innovative products which, for the first time ever, truly meet the needs of today's mobile professionals," said Alan Soucy, general manager of Philips Mobile Computing Group. "Using our handheld computing device, customers can take their Windows applications on the road with them — and synchronization back to the desktop is easy and automatic."

"The Microsoft goal with the Windows CE platform is to create the open, standard, unifying platform that will enable the handheld computing market to expand to its full potential," said Craig Mundie, senior vice president of the Consumer Platforms Division at Microsoft. We are confident that the combination of this new Windows-based platform with handheld computing devices from Philips, one of the world's leading consumer electronics companies, will help us successfully achieve that objective."

The Philips Mobile Computing Group, with headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, is one of the first new multimedia initiatives from Philips Electronics. Its products include: consumer electronics; lighting; components; semiconductors; communication systems; multimedia systems and software; domestic appliances; professional solutions; medical systems and personal care products.
