Proxim Demonstrates RangeLAN/PCMCIA First ”PCMCIA” Wireless Adapter
LAS VEGAS, NV — November 16, 1992 — Proxim, Inc. is demonstrating at COMDEX its RangeLAN/PCMCIA(TM) wireless LAN adapter, designed for the TYPE II PCMCIA ''credit card'' slot in portables, notebooks and palmtop computers.
RangeLAN/PCMCIA is the first wireless LAN adapter to be demonstrated which fits the specifications of the TYPE II PCMCIA "credit card" slot. Using spread spectrum technology over a range of up to 800 feet, RangeLAN/PCMCIA supports most popular LAN operating systems. The product, announced in September, is scheduled to ship in early January, 1993, at an affordable $595 per adapter.
"RangeLAN/PCMCIA will be available coincidental with the shipment of many new notebook and pen-based computers using the 'credit card' slot" said Rick Heller, President of Proxim. "This combination brings portable computing to a new level of functionality, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this technology."
Proxim has developed relationships with a variety of vendors in the industry, introducing the PCMCIA standard to the wireless arena. The RangeLAN/PCMCIA adapter is being shown at numerous booths around the COMDEX show floor.
At Microsoft's Windows(TM) for Workgroups booth, RangeLAN/PCMCIA will be seen on a pen-based computer, running application software written by PenKnowledge. Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) for Workgroups network operating system application demonstrates how doctors can automate their paperwork while retaining mobility in networked offices.
At the Zenith Data Systems booth, RangeLAN/PCMCIA will be demonstrated with the newly announced Z-LITE 320L, ZDS' new powerful, light-weight portable which sports two PCMCIA slots.
GRiD Systems Corporation will be showing the newly-announced GRiD Convertible pen-based computer with RangeLAN/PCMCIA.
RangeLAN/PCMCIA wireless LAN adapters provide a wireless networking solution to portable users, enabling them to easily set up an ''instant'' local area network without cable, or to extend the existing LAN to hard-to-reach places. RangeLAN provides drivers for most popular LAN operating systems including both server-based and peer-to-peer networks.
Because RangeLAN adapters use spread spectrum technology, they require no end user license. RangeLAN adapters operate at a data rate of 242 Kbps and are functional over a distance of up to 800 feet.
RangeLAN adapters are available in several form factors including RangeLAN/ISA(TM) for servers and desktop PCs (retail $495), RangeLAN/LT(TM) for Compaq portables (retail $595), RangeLAN/Parallel(TM), which connects to the printer port of any PC (retail $595), and RangeLAN/PCMCIA for PCMCIA-equipped notebook and pen-based computers (retail $595).
The initial product, RangeLAN/ISA for desktop and server machines, began shipping in early 1992, with RangeLAN/LT for Compaq portables released in summer, 1992. The products are available through resellers and VARS around the country.
Headquartered in Mountain View, CA, Proxim was founded in 1984 to develop and market wireless communications products. The company entered the LAN market in early 1992 with RangeLAN wireless LAN adapter products.
