Proxim RangeLAN/PCMCIA Wireless LAN Adapter Supports GRiD ”Convertible” Notebook/Pen Computer

COMDEX, Las Vegas, NV — November 16, 1992 — Proxim Inc. today announced that its recently-announced RangeLAN/PCMCIA(TM) wireless LAN adapters support GRiD Systems Corp.'s new Convertible(TM) pen-based notebook computer announced here.

''RangeLAN/PCMCIA enhances the advanced technology used by GRiD in a powerful new GRiD Convertible,'' said Rick Heller, President of Proxim Inc. ''The convenience of a fully functional pen-based computer combined with wireless networking capabilities offers users flexibility never before available.''

Proxim's RangeLAN/PCMCIA provides wireless networking capabilities to users of the GRiD Convertible over most popular LAN operating systems, including Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) for Workgroups, Novell NetWare and Netware Lite, Lantastic and 10NET.

''The GRiD Convertible combined with Proxim's RangeLAN/PCMCIA gives users portable networking,'' said Jerry Keeran, Director of Communications Products for GRiD Computers. ''This combination promises to spawn a new tier of applications for the industry.''

One such application is already being demonstrated at COMDEX in the Microsoft booth (No. 2416, Main Hall). PenKnowledge, Inc. of Birmingham, Alabama will be demonstrating a medical application under Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) for Workgroups and Windows(TM) for Pen Computing.

PenKnowledge's ''Doctor's Office'' uses the GRiD Convertible with a RangeLAN/PCMCIA to link to the office LAN.

Proxim offers RangeLAN's family of wireless LAN adapters for desktop and portable computers. Designed to affordably extend existing LANs in difficult-to-wire locations and to portables, RangeLAN offers a maximum range of 800 feet and requires no end user license. Using Spread Spectrum technology, RangeLAN products operate at a data rate of 242 Kbps.

RangeLAN adapters are available in several form factors including RangeLAN/ISA(TM) for servers and desktop PCs, RangeLAN/Parallel(TM), which connects to the printer port of any PC, and RangeLAN/PCMCIA for TYPE II PCMCIA-equipped notebooks and pen-based computers.
