Radiomail Introduces First Wireless E-mail for Pen-Based Commputers
LAS VEGAS — November 16, 1992 — Wireless electronic mail from RadioMail Corp., first introduced last month at the Electronic Mail Association Conference, has now been extended to the world of pen-based computing.
This new service gives users of the GRiD Convertible pen-based notebook computer instant access to the world of two-way RadioMail. Now pen computer users can communicate from remote locations to various e-mail systems, including cc:Mail, the Internet, X.400, MCI-Mail, ATTMail and others.
RadioMail is the first commercial wireless e-mail application for pen-based computers operating over the RAM Mobile Data network. In addition to the GRiD Convertible pen-based notebook, the new service also supports the GRiDPAD, GRiDPAL SL, and the GRiD PalmPAD.
Portable devices are essentially communicating devices, according to Geoffrey S. Goodfellow, chairman of RadioMail. "A major limiting factor in expanding the market for pencentric applications has been the lack of untethered communications from the field," said Goodfellow.
"Pen-based RadioMail connectivity is the 'killer application' that will allow mobile workers the ability to exchange information seamlessly with the home office, field offices and their customers."
Bruce Walter, president of GRiD praised the application and noted, "Our new GRiD Convertible enables the mobile notebook computer user to take advantage of the features of pen computing. RadioMail's e-mail service will extend and enhance the value of the Convertible by supporting two-way wireless communications."
The new client application was developed by RadioMail Corp. and PEN PAL Associates Inc., using the Power PEN PAL development environment, which uses extensions for pen computing provided by GRiD's PenRight software. The client connects via packet switched radio to the RadioMail Gateway Service, which delivers the mail to its ultimate destination.
