SanDisk Flash Storage Cards to Be Used With Compaq’s New Windows CE-Based PC Companion
LAS VEGAS — November 18, 1996 — SanDisk Corp. (SNDK) today announced its flash storage PC Card will be used by Compaq Computer Corp. in its new Compaq PC companion, a handheld product based on the new Windows CE operating system.
The cards, which are available now, will be sold under the Compaq label. The announcement was made at the COMDEX Fall '96 trade show.
The PCMCIA/ATA compatible solid-state storage cards will be sold in the removable Type II format in 10 Mbyte (MB) capacities. They will provide users with additional storage beyond the 2 and 4MB RAM provided in two Compaq PC companion models. The storage cards will give users with large data or program files the extra storage capacity they need and provide them with critical back-up for databases and other files. The cards also will provide them with the means to easily transfer files and programs to any of the many ATA- based electronic systems with Type II or Type III PC card slots.
"The Compaq PC companion offers customers exceptional flexibility, functionality and compatibility, allowing users to efficiently access and share information on their PCs while working remotely," said Ed Olkkola, vice president, Communications Products Division at Compaq. "The SanDisk ATA-based storage card offers customers an industry-standard, reliable, high performance and affordable solution for extending the storage capacity of the Compaq PC companion."
Nelson Chan, SanDisk vice president of marketing, said, "We think that the Compaq PC companion will be a great success and believe that consumers will discover that our FlashDisk cards are a great addition to their new system. We look forward to a long relationship with Compaq and the use of SanDisk storage products in new Compaq computers in the future."
The new 10MB storage cards will be priced at $ 299 and can be purchased by calling Compaq authorized resellers. The cards present almost no power drain to the Compaq computer because they are automatically powered down when the computer is not writing or reading to the cards. They also have an operating shock rating of 1,000 Gs, equivalent to an 8-foot drop to the floor. This makes them practically impervious to shock or vibration typically experienced in a mobile computing environment.
