Sierra Wireless Announces Cellular Data Communications for Windows CE Devices

SAN FRANCISCO — March 4, 1997 — Today at CTIA Wireless 97, Sierra Wireless, a leading cellular data hardware and software supplier, announced the first complete cellular data communications solution for hand-held computers running Microsoft's Windows CE operating system.

The PocketPlus CE allows users to access cellular data services including circuit-switched and CDPD, send faxes and email, and access the Internet wirelessly using Windows CE Inbox and Pocket Internet Explorer applications. The PocketPlus CE also provides a standard RJ11 telephone jack for convenient landline connection.

"In the past, the growth of the hand-held computer market has been impeded by poor integration of computing and communications capabilities," said Sierra president and chief executive officer, David Sutcliffe. "Our Windows CE-compatible wireless data package makes mobile hand-held computing effortless."

The Solution

The PocketPlus CE comes with all the software and hardware necessary for a complete mobile computing solution. It includes an FCC-approved modem bundled with Windows CE-compatible firmware and a serial cable. The PocketPlus CE is a self-contained, multi-mode modem for cellular data service, which includes a cellular radio transceiver, antenna, and fax/modem in one convenient package. The PocketPlus CE features its own rechargeable, internal battery pack, which combined with CDPD power save features, does not affect the limited power supply of Windows CE devices.

This new Windows CE version of the PocketPlus, the winner of the 1995 Mobile Insights award for "Year's Best Two-Way Wireless Modem," is enthusiastically supported by Sierra's wireless solution partners.

"This combination of CDPD, cellular and wireline communications with the Windows CE platform is of serious interest to our customers who are looking at palmtop solutions," said David Oros, president of Aether Technologies, a leading-edge wireless data solutions provider in the financial and transportation markets.

The explosive growth of the Internet and intranets for enterprise computing is driving increased user demand for "anytime/anywhere" computing in all market segments for applications ranging from real-time order entry to wireless email. Wireless Windows CE devices have the potential to enable a new range of business solutions where a full-sized notebook computer solution is either too expensive or too large. Target markets include law enforcement, transportation, field service, mobile inspection and field audit.

The PocketPlus CE is currently undergoing customer beta testing. Commercial shipments and pricing will be available in the second quarter of 1997.
